VLC (VideoLAN) is a multi-platform multimedia player. It can read DVDs, VCDs, MPEG, and DivX files and from a satellite card. It can also read a stream from a network sent by the VideoLAN Server or another source. The stream can be MPEG 2 TS in UDP or HTTP packets unicasted or multicasted on an IPv4 or IPv6 network.

It allows me to play a greater variety of video files than my Windows Media Player in Windows Vista Premium allows me to. Not able to fast forward (as far as I know) when I am watching video files that have been saved to my hard drive.

I preciate that it plays almost all formats I need and for me it works excellent. I'd like it still better if it would use the first frame as thumbnail instead of its cone.

Easy to use, multiple speed playback, updated regularly It can stop working if you fast foward at maximum speed (8x) for to long. A must have media player, very good open source software.

see below. I basically love the product BUT want the ability to convert between file types. The version with the option "file" is the one you can use to convert from one file type to another (ex. from flv to wmv), correct? Can I do this with the version with the word "media" as the first option?? I am confused. Your review video (from the website) shows an option with the word "file" as the first option. The one I downloaded has the word "media" instead. I want to be able to convert from .flv to .wmv; don't I need the "file" choice to be able to do that? Is the ability to convert not available in version 1.1? I don't know if anyone will respond tio this question, but I wanted to mention the "problem."

Intuitive setup, ease of use, not fancy, quick start up I can't think of anything to gripe about! Since I've been using VLC for several years now, it's come a long way. I now use this exclusively for all my video viewing needs. It's wicked awesome. Anything NOT Microsoft is a plus in my book.

vlc has never given me trouble before- it plays everything you throw at it This version however seems buggy. It crashed on me a number of times. Also, it started loading a font cache before playing- something that to the best of my knowledge was the domain of vlc portable (by portable apps) Following the lead of others in the vlc forum, I uninstalled and reinstalled v 1.0.5 - back to Ole Faithful. I trust that the folks at vlc will get this ironed out soon enough, but until then I'm staying put.

My one-word summary for how I feel about VLC is "ambivalent". On one hand, it's my go-to player for any file that doesn't work on my more user-friendly players of choice. It hardly ever fails to play a file. But on the other hand, I have to deal with hassles galore whenever I use VLC. For example, to hear any audio when I'm using headphones, I have to manually select Audio > Audio Device > Stereo each and every time I open a file. Since VLC doesn't remember position automatically the way KMPlayer can, I have to seek to the desired place. And for reasons unknown to me, all video in VLC is substantially darker than it is in either KMPlayer or MPC-HC, and I can't find a way to fix it. Oh, and the A-B repeat feature still sucks.

Threw alot of formats at it.. so far so good! Small options. The cone icon is a little boring... but hey I stink at art too. This is a descent (spyware!) free program. Much love to the CNET Team!!!

It is amazing to find a dvd player that is free. Nothing to report

Plays the various formats. Messes with internet clip playing in an aggravating way. Not worth downloading - I found using a good codec pack with windows media player to be better.
