The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Free/Can do everything Photoshop can/Stable(I use it a lot)/Superior to Photoshop in some ways/Extremely customizable/Fast/Has fully freatured, yet very small size portable version (can run on any computer from a USB thumbdrive) User interface advanced features may take you a while to figure out/An occasional bug but no more so than in Photoshop Photoshop equivalent for free? Is it possible? I did not think so, but it is. GIMP really is a fully featured, heavy duty professional graphic editing software with nothing cheap about it. If you are an experienced Photoshop user, you will find the learning curve for GIMP minimal. If you are an experienced computer user, but new to image editing, your learning curve will be moderate but you will manage. It would not be any easier with the Photoshop for the first time. Just experiment, read the help files and the net, and you will be fine. There is just about nothing you cannot do in GIMP My favorite feature, though: Portable GIMP version! It can do everything, just about, the regular GIMP can, yet it is a tiny application for the USB thumbdrive. It is extremely useful in situations where you do not have administrator priviledges and could not install full GIMP. I was able to run it on networked, firewalled, protected PCs where it would not let me do as much as look at the calendar and change screen resolution, yet alone install any software. GIMP made it possible for me to do heavy duty editing even on those machines. Impossible with Photoshop at any price!

Great if you want to do some image work but don't want to pay for Photoshop. None for me. I use GIMP for the minor image work I need to do as a website owner. It has been able to do everything I need it to do. Not sure how it would work for a full blown graphic artist, but I love it.

number of features, ease of use, save options access to instructions, guides, etc. Like this better than Paint.net. Nice features and great quality in the results. Getting most of my "how-to-use" info from YouTube vids, but that's OK, too. New to all of this, so don't know how reliable my review is!

I am sure if I were able to use the program as designed there would be some pros. "Execution error for procedure 'plug-in-web-browser':Failed to open 'http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/index.html': There is no application associated with the given file name extension."Regardless of my choice from the drop-down menu in help-Failed to.. Can't access image saved on my computer, can access help. so what does it matter if it's free?

First, GIMP is not an Adobe program. You can start with just some basic photo-enhancing "tools" and do amazing things even if you have no artistic ability at all. Then as you become familiar with more "tools" you will be able to do EVERYTHING! The user interface of GIMP is superb. But it is a complicated, powerful program that will take time and effort to completely master. GIMP is not a browser or e-mail program. It is not a iProgram for dummies. Get GIMP in the beginning just to enhance your digital photographs. Then gradually learn to do everything -- all for free. And GIMP is a good program because it is not an Adobe program.
