Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. The goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. The intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firefox (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser.

Widely used and has all the features any one would ever need Continually corrupts itself especially when upgrading to a new version I have used Thunderbird in various version for over a decade and the latest upgrade to 3.0 has sent me looking else where. A common occurrence over the years has been occasional corruption of profiles especially when upgrading to a new version. Well it happened again going to 3.0 and I am done. i can't afford to find out after the fact that my email program is not working properly. Not in this day and age. I am unsure what direction I will take, but I am not going through the pain of creating a new profile again and migrating over information. To bad Thunderbird just hasn't been able to over come these issue over time.

Works good, easy to use, FREE, Better than Outlook for free New version can be a little tricky to get set up to suit you. A great email client that will free you from Outlook. Once you use it for a while and learn all the different ways you can organize and set it up, you will love it. The lightning calendar that can be integrated, is great and is easy to sync with google calendar to keep the calendars on all of your computers synced.

No problems upgrading from version 2, once you get it going it works very well, optional themes and add-ons. Mozilla are primarily a bunch of eggheads who assume everyone who uses their software are eggheads, in other words getting help can be extremely frustrating. I tried version 3 when it first came out and it completely trashed everything. I didn't have the same problem with this version, it migrated everything from 2 to 3 without a hitch. I hate the way Thunderbird looks in Vista but thankfully there are some themes that make big improvements. There are also add-ons available that make it possible to collapse the header bar and do a variety of other functions. What I like about this approach is you can only add those features you want and keep bloating to a minimum. On the other hand it takes a little time and effort to figure out how to do it. It has a Configuration Editor similar to Firefox's about:config that allows more customization than what's available to the average user. And if you're familiar with CSS you can tweak virtually anything your heart desires. As someone else said, once you figure it out you'll love it, I totally agree. Thunderbird's a reliable workhorse, at least it has been for me.

"Very good, but sometimes slow changing to write/reply" Easy to use. Tabs are nice and similar to tabbed browsers. Operation keys for each email appear in both the preview window as well as the new tab. When deleting several items, you can review before deleting as they are shown in the preview window Takes a bit longer to load completely. If you try to open a write window or click "Reply" before it has completely opened, it freezes. That hasn't happened as often. Maybe I'm more patient.

Thunderbird has completely replaced Outlook and Outlook Express for me. It does everything that the others do and better! Really can't think of any that can't be taken care of from within the program itself. If your like me and have a desire to store your emails on your own computer as long as you want, and you don't want to have to log on to you email server 4 or 5 times a day. Then Thunderbird is the one for you. With widely customizable options, easy configuration, and a slick interface, Thunderbird is the only email client you will ever need! Try it - You'll like it! P.S. Get Mozbackup and backing up your settings and emails couldn't be easier, plus it also does backups for Firefox.

My computer didn't crashIt uninstalled well Thunderbird confirmed importing addresses, etc from Outlook Express on installation, but none of that stuff was there when the client opened. Thunderbird failed to import addresses, folders, accounts from Outlook Express ...so in order to use it, I would have had to somehow manually get it import or enter the info line by line. Outlook express works OK for me, so it's just not worth the time & hassle. I was also unsure whether it would work with hotmail accounts.

Don't know have had to revert to 2.0 every time. It doesn't work right. Hopefully some day it will work right. Finally got a response from the Thunderbird team after 4 months that something was in the works.

Thunderbird has been a great email program. I have used it for about a decade. The upgrade of the dictionary is a blessing. FINALLY it recognizes Teh is supposed to be The. Too much fluff and nonsense added. 3.0.4 adds a non collapsible title box with all the info that is already highlighted in the email list and adds an additional set of unnecessary action buttons that are traditionally at the top. That's a waste of space. The tabs aren't necessary because the emails are already listed. The count of emails in a folder is gone. I want that. Folders that were included with the INBOX drawer are now moved to LOCAL FOLDERS drawer at the bottom of the list. If files are "Grouped by Sort" (nice), then when searching, found files are presented in a collapsed "Yesterday, Last Week, Two Weeks Ago, Old Mail" and it is necessary to expand each category. That is an added step and waste of time. When writing an email, I liked the old option block for larger, smaller, bold underline etc. better than the new display. In conclusion, I like 3.0.3 better. The only good addition to 3.0.4 is the slightly improved dictionary.

I like handling of numerous profiles, but maybe every other competitor does this too. As in earlier versions, task manager sometimes finds up to 5 instances of Thunderbird processes open simultaneously. When Thunderbird refuses to open, closing all these extras is a necessary nuisance. Reinstalling did not help. Windows XP here. Updated on Apr 13, 2010

Page layout is good .. But a few problems as stated below. Not like outlook .. If you reply to sender, the attachment or pictures disappear. That means, I can not pass a comment. If I click on forward, all the non BCC addresses is no longer private ..

I like the fact that it is free, and it looks very good in its features, in fact it works very well with gmail won't work with hotmail or other other accounts. also added an account that i don't have. when I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it to try fresh settings, somehow it found all the settings and previous email that it had in the older version. it won't work with hotmail, or other accounts. throws hidden files over the system. When I tried to uninstall, clean the registry, delete the hidden files I could find, clean the recycle bin, etc. etc. and then reinstall, use another version, somehow again and again it found all the previous settings and files. It was maddening.
