Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. The goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. The intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firefox (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser.

I use thunderbird everyday and it's... well it's ok... it's not amazing..But I can't quite tell you why. It does everything reasonably well with just a few exceptions: Anti spam tools might as well be non-existant they're so rubbish, and filters are just fiddly an annoying to set up. Adding additional components does bring some quite good functionality, but overall I just feel thnderbird needs updating and rather than just keeping up with other mail clients, could maybe start to do something truly innovative.

Needs lots of work, I uninstalled it. Not as good as what I have and not at all user friendly for server setup or signatures. Did not like this at all. They have a ways to go yet. I think they should stick to what they are good at, browsers...

Since no changelog was provided, I guess *I* will have to post a link to it: http://www.rumblingedge....redder-alpha-2-released/ Oh, well. That wasn't hard :)

I'm sure someone could have picked a less lame screenshot. Maybe something that showed a CHANGE?

Changelog: http://www.rumblingedge....redder-alpha-3-released/ Over 400 changes listed, however I have a feeling that Thunderbird is dead ...

If you have XP (not OE replacement in Vista I've not tested) and aren't paying an arm and a leg for MS Office 2007 (not Outlook 2007 I've not tested) and you want IMAP (GMail with IMAP) so you can have full on and offline functionality synced across desktop and laptop, there is no better email client than Thunderbird I've tested, and I've recently tested quite a few. Thunderbird is very solid and mature, and version 3 alphas show a nice visual refresh in addition to upgrades in functionality and performance. What's not to like.

@Aegis69 - Try to manage multiples accounts on gmail - Try to create folders and filters on gmail ^^ - Try to protect your privacy from google ? Sooner or later, everybody will understand this. Take Back Your Mails !

Excellent product, but the days of the desktop email app may be over as people enjoy the benefits of having centralized, web based email like gmail. People don't have to know terms like IMAP or have to know to setup their SMTP settings in order to use gmail, and it can be securely accessed from any computer they might go on. I use Thunderbird because of the power features, as a system admin I find it and its addons indispensable, but for average users this and Outlook are total overkill.

I much prefer using Thunderbird over Gmail. That being said, after the long wait for Thunderbird 3, I find it to be very disappointing. + New engine, so a slight bit faster. + GMail IMAP account profile which makes it a breeze to get connected to there (I have other accounts too). - Completely pointless tabbing added to the main window. Could not find a way to hide the tab bar. - Pointless buttons added in the message header area. Especially so if you have messages open in a new window. Buttons for the same functions exist right above the header. + Fixes a number of minor annoyances that users have reported, but these are only noticeable by very few. Overall, there is nothing Earth-shattering though that wasn't the stated goal of the release. It's an architectural update with the few big frontend changes being the most annoying. It sounds like the team is relying on users to handle the innovation with addons.

@Ulmo - You don't REALLY need multiple email accounts unless you're some kind of v-pimp. You can easily forward all other non-essential email accounts to a single Gmail account for easy management. - Try using labels, they're really nice and they also show as 'folders' via IMAP. That's how I separate emails from work, voicemail and some online stores. Very easy to re-organize, you don't need to move emails at all. - Privacy? There's no such thing, unless both parties use encryption. Gmail or not. I still prefer using an email client myself and Thunderbird does a really good job. IMAP was a nice addition to Gmail, so now I can use both. I use Gmail when my browser is already open..

This is an excellent e-mail program if you have multiple e-mail accounts to manage. Otherwise Google's gmail is better in every way. As for privacy, nobody respects people's privacy better than Google.

Well they finally added the bcc option, now i can't seem to find the option that allows you to see how many emails are in each folder. And like the one user mentioned, the tab feature is totally useless in an email client.

Works really well. Love the improvements. Have also been using the nightly builds, with no issues. Tabbed email is nice, good for checking between 2 emails without having to close and open each one. Thunderbird rocks.

Great application. Best email client I've ever used and it's completely free. Version 3.0 is just amazing, so many improvements regarding the Thunderbird 2.0 and the development team has already plans for version 4.0

thunderbird (2) was my main mail client for a few years, but there was always something about that niggled me that left me feeling I was settling for something that wasn't brilliant just because it was free. trying V3 beta 3, some things have changed, but really not a lot. The UI is still ugly as sin (llooks way better on OSX from the screenshots I've seen) but looks tired and old and grey in windows. Got multiple tabs - nice, but nothign much else that makes me want to return to using it. Mostly I've switched over to Postbox for my offline mail or gmail for online, Postbox is based on Thunderbird but ti's everything that TB should have been 5 years+ ago. It's free, so that's good, but there are 100s of free email clients that I think are as a good as TB.

Wow! Postbox is the slickest email client with the best (zero-configuration) setup I've ever used. It's based on tbird so has extensions and plugins listed on their site. Cpu is kinda high but so was tbird. Except tbird never flew so smooth. Was just about to try this again cause I miss the html views but after trying postbox there's no doubt tbird can't hold a candle.
