Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. This allows you to remove traces of your Internet or PC activities, as well as reverse any changes to your Favorites, home page, registry and more. Even files that were downloaded during a sandbox session will be wiped after the sandbox is cleared. The program runs in the system tray and if you want to start a sandboxed session, simply launch your browser, or any other program via the tray icon, rather than the regular way.

I love this program. Been using it for years. Great tool, a must have for browsing suspicious sites or running dubious executables. I'm amazed how much better this program has gotten compared to so many others that just bloat up.

This is very quickly becoming one of my favorite applications for testing. In conjunction with VirtualBox; never fearing to affect my own machine. For me, it's important to be able to test and not make a mess of my own machine. Recommended. LHenryJr. www.lehsys.com

Does what it says and keeps things from automatically getting saved to your regular hard drive. You have to open up your browser in non-sandbox to save bookmarks and browser settings. It's a minor thing but being new to this program, I forget that I'm sandboxed sometimes and add bookmarks and save browser settings that disappear when I exit. I recommend it to prevent unwanted things on your hard drive. If you go to a site you want to bookmark, you can always copy the url and pull up the regular browser (un-sandboxed) and paste the url then bookmark and close the regular browser and you'd still have your sandboxed one up and right where you want to be in it. That's a real minor inconvenience when you realize how well sandboxie protects your computer from viruses and malware. Plus with sandboxie, any downloads you save pulls up a box asking you whether you want to save the file for real to the location or just have it show there while sandboxie is running and get deleted when sandboxie is closed. It's a program I wished I'd had all along. Give it a try, if you don't like it you can always uninstall it afterward.

Nothing. It's useless and worst of all hard to get rid of. Doesn't work. Built in uninstall doesn't work. Very difficult to uninstall. Downloaded and seemed to install ok. When I tried to use it nothing worked. I kept getting error messages. Clicked on help and was taken to a web page. Looked up each error message. They all said download the latest version. Tried that. Still wouldn't work. Tried to uninstall with Revo Uninstaller. It would always hang on using the built in uninstaller. I had to use Task Manager to stop the Sandboxie installer. That's right the installer would run. I know that it's not uncommon for an installer to run and give you the option to uninstall. This didn't do that. It just stopped and wouldn't go on. After I shut it down in Task Manager Revo Uninstaller would continue. After it finished the first pass I was suspicious and used the back button to try again. First I wiped the original program with the Gutman method using 10 passes. This exceeds DOD requirements. Again the installer tried to run and I had to shut it down with Task Manager. After doing this twice Revo finally reported that it didn't find any traces. I am still suspicious but haven't had time to do a manual check of the registry. All in all I would call this malware.

If you download potentially dangerous files on a regular basis (ie, torrrents or files from rapidshare/megaupload) - open them up in Sandboxie and any malware will be contained in the "Sandbox", and your o/s remains safe! Works like a charm You have to pay to get the full version... but the full version only means you get more than the standard 2 "Sandboxes" - personally I feel 2 Sandboxes is more than adequate, so there is no real incentive to buy (maybe this should be under "Pros"!?) Awesome application. Keeps your system clean and safe - you can open literally ANYTHING in a Sandbox, so even if you are visiting a potentially dangerous website, if the browser is Sandboxed there is no risk whatsoever. Simple to use, free, and just basically awesome, I highly recommend

I wonder if the previous reviewer can provide a single example of a way to bypass Sandboxie. (OK, I lied; I don't really wonder, I very strongly doubt he can. And saying "It has happened before!" doesn't cut it.) Provide such an example, and the author will fix the problem.

There are hundreds possible ways to execute (malware)-code out of the sandbox. This tool is just as secure as digging oil out the water with a kano.

Show me just one way to execute (malware) code from the internet that gets out of this sandbox, and I will give you a thousand bucks! the only malware that stands a chance would be malware that you run OUTSIDE of this sandbox.....

Robust ProtectionCan be integrated with your existing programs like internet download manager, norton, and many more.Easy to useCan make unlimited sandboxes for each of your program.when a program is sandboxed no files will get into your system gui is not very appealing aside from that all is good. Sandboxie is a very effective way of protecting you computer from malware. Surf the internet and you don't have to worry about driveby downloads because they can only install themselves in the virtual. It is a good addition to your security programs.

I read somewhere that you can turn lead into gold and the wizard of oz is a true story and you can really get malware out of sandboxie especially if you have a good anti-virus running at the same time like avira.......

I'm not some amazing computer programmer and even less so a computer hacker as I am just a hobbyist who just like to play around with programming etc. I do read a ton about security related stuff but admit I have never not once ever written a program to do any of the hacking etc. So the best I can offer are links to research papers that talk about "escaping" being sandboxed, but none specifically target Sandboxie itself but with some work might be possible, maybe I honestly don't know. For me it's not malware trying to "escape" being sandboxed that has me concerned as much as detected they are sandboxed and then finding a way to exploit that fact to their benefit. One exploit (if you can call it that) was that when the malware detects it sandboxed it does what it claims like generate random lottery numbers or something, the user sees nothing suspicious so the next time he/she runs it outside the sandbox, the malware detects this and then it's true reason to be kicks in. Some interesting read but nothing that says how to escape a Sandbox http://www.seclab.tuwien...at/papers/detection.pdf http://taviso.decsystem.org/virtsec.pdf Now with all this out the way, and probably unnecessary :) I've been using Sandboxie for a while and it's just plain great.

I still like and use this software, but a couple of the quotes below don't make sense to me. First, the claim that if everyone used Sandboxie to run downloaded software, malware would be less of a problem. I don't understand that statement. If you run malware in a sandbox, and your anti-virus application misses it, you'll run it outside the sandbox and it'll be missed there, too. If your anti-virus catches it, it would have also caught it outside the sandbox. And then there's the author's statement that "the only option for cracking will be to install a replacement Sandboxie driver that came from a pirate." What about stolen credit cards? A common method for obtaining illicit keys is to obtain them legitimately, using illegitimate purchaser information. To the author, such keys will appear legitimate unless/until the credit issuer makes contact, which may never happen. I have no problem with recurring activation, but it should be invisible to the user. I don't want to ever be prompted, no matter how infrequently. I also don't want to have to worry that my software will stop working if activation fails because there's some intermittent problem with my internet connection.

Sandboxie is one of the most important programs someone can use to protect their pc. If everyone ran their browser and downloads first inside sandboxie there would be much less malware and virus spreading. Sandboxie has added online activation for paid users but it is more than fair and I understand the authors reasons. The old method had no way of checking keys so one key could be used thousands of times. One activation every 90 days and letting people use it multiple times on multiple pc is more than fair. Most software makes you buy a copy for each pc. Quotes from the author about this: ------------------------------------------------------- Due to rampant piracy of Sandboxie registration keys I have decided to implement a new activation policy. Starting with version 3.47, Sandboxie is licensed using new Product Keys instead of the old-style Registration Keys. The new Product Keys have to be activated online once every 90 days. Version 3.47.01 should automatically upgrade legitimate old-style Registration Keys to new-style Product Keys. During this transitional period, the online store for Sandboxie still issues old-style Registration Keys, however these will be automatically upgraded into the new style Product Key when used to unlock Sandboxie. Hopefully this transition will go smoothly. Please let me know if you experience any problems. "Yes, the licensing terms remain the same, and there are no limits on how many times you can activate a personal license. However, I do record the number of activations coming from different computers and I reserve the right to cancel product keys that seem to be abused. For example, buying one personal key which is then activated on 100 computers. I don't know about other software but I assure you that activation in Sandboxie is going to be painless. You'll get a pop-up, you'll click Activate License, and that will be it. You get reminders during the last seven days of your activation period, so that should rule

@Plumber The reason sandboxie would reduce malware if everyone ran downloads inside it is because you can run the program inside sandboxie then look at the changes it makes to the system in the sandboxie container before you install it in the main OS. 95% of malware is easy to spot once installed because it installs things that are not normally related to the program you intended to install.

I switched to Returnil VM. I wanted something that will "sandbox" the whole OS, not just individual apps, and that is free for personal use. Returnil is OK except that it comes with an AV component which is probably the worst in the world. Just shut that off and use your own AV. I used to use Sandboxie and it did work as advertised. It sounds like they're moving to a strictly "for pay" product now with a 90 day nag. That's not cool. I understand people have bills to pay but whatever..... In any event, because I haven't used the product since the recoding I still have to give it a 5--well, a 4-- after all, I may be totally wrong.

It made my old genuine regcode useless. Even after uninstall of 3.48 i couldn't run the older version (got the error: Control Window Error - Program must be closed). Pure crap ! It has become a spyware as well now when it has to be re-activated every 90 days. All phonehome crap should be forbidden ! Liked it before, now it is blacklisted ! I am also annoyed that it STILL doesn't support Windows XP x64 Edition. POOR !!!

Same as other versions of Sandboxie Version 3.48 introduces new Product Keys to replace old Registration Keys and requires periodic online activation of Product Key. Download Sandboxie 3.46 or lower versions instead! When you register, its activated forever!
