Alac (m4a) was updated. The hell with a gui. My flac files are wasted on my junky sndcrd & mobo anyways. My 2.1 altec lansing's only mask this. The installer asked for internet access for some reason. Foo_ dop was updated as well and now there is a pod(cast) catcher plugin from same page.

foobar is good, really it is.. I used it for a while and liked it, only changed when I discovered AIMP (which, for me, suits my needs slightly more) HOwever, this is still version 0.9.. c'mon this has been "beta" for years and years and years. As it is (and has been for ages), it's stable. Make it Version 1 so that all those people who won't try beta software will.

@pmerritt: "It supports basically every audio format you throw at it" Foobar doesn't play well MIDI file. JetAudio is better or MIDI. I agree however that foobar is a good player. Simple but performant.

Jumped to this from 0.9.6. Still has the BUG that kills off the IMGBurn shell extension in Explorer. BAD! BAD CHILD!! FOUR stars.

Amazing sound. This player means business: quality over flashy buttons, performance over eye candy. Period. A must have for all hardcore music lovers. I'm currently using version 0.9.6.4. beta, and i have to say that the sound quality dominates any other players i've used in the recent past, INCLUDING AIMP2 ! The 0.9.6.4 version includes a dsp plugin called "Resampler" , which resamples the output frequency up to 96000 mhz ! Using this plugin with the highly efficient 18 band EQ will produce an unsurpassed music listening experience never heard before on any music player out there! Goodbye Aimp2 ! may you be UNINSTALLED in peace....

Doesn't kill off Explorer extensions any more. Good stuff - but still ugly as sin and needs a facelift. ;) FIVE stars.

**** design. **** anything else but quality. Got my cambridge 540 v2 today. got my canton 409 speakers today. Got my pro-ject usb-box today. tried itunes -> terrible. tried winamp -> terrible. tried 5 another players-> terrible. found some strange feeware named foobar2000 -> Call me fanboy. I just have no reason to continue searching. It just SOUNDS right. (As ugly, as it is ;) )

I can't seem to remember judging music EVER by the way it looked. As far as a pc 'stereo' setup, maybe you wankers need to get better speakers and start complaining about how they look too. All this needs is a decent remote.

How many times will I have to say this? And I hope a good many will agree: Foobar2k's interface is not ugly, it's simple! Perpahs too simple to suit the taste of some, but I actually like it. Sound quality in F2k is great, and the GUI does its job in a clean, simple way. If simple is ugly my friend, then that's only a matter of taste.

Saying "**** anything else but quality" doesn't really make sense, because "quality" is a relative term. I'd say fb2k has quality internals, but a very low-quality interface. Not because it's not pretty enough, but because it's not easy enough to use.

FFS. Could people PLEASE stop wanking off about how it's ugly and needs a facelift. If looks REALLY are more important to you, get the customizable UI componentry and quit whining. Go here (http://customize.org/foobar) to see what you can do with it. This player is absolutely perfect in every way, INCLUDING UI flexibility.

IMHO foobar2000 has the best sound quality of any audio player in my collection. I personally find the GUI pleasing. Perhaps, in part, because I favor the way it handles the music library and information display and because it doesn't look like the control panel of a spaceship. The window colors can be set to compliment the XP Zune theme, adding to it's appeal. The only thing missing is a nice set of control buttons, but I can live with that.

Sound quality in all the majors is now moot and irrelevant and any claims that A or B is superior to the others are a lie. Why? Because they're all using essentially the same algorithm to decode, jacked out to n degrees of precision. If you're using ASIO or an equivalent with your player of choice, it matters even less. What does that leave? Feature set, ease of use and sppearance. Foobar has good features. It now is much easier to use and configure than it was early in its lifespan. As far as looks go, it stinks. When you have quality sound across the board with all the players and a good feature set again across the board, appearance to complement one's desktop is one of the few ways left to favorably differentiate yourself from the competition. Foobar fails abysmally there. Pure propellerheads of course are utterly incapable of grasping this subtle but obvious concept as they lack the required circuitry. FIVE stars.

Wow--how people miss the point. Simple? Yes. The same way a hedge trimmer is easy to use, but have fun using it to perform bypass surgery. Easy to organize music with, the same way one would with J. River Media Center or MediaMonkey? Filtering, categorization, rating--these are all as easy to figure out and perform on a daily basis as with the others? Yeah--right.

For those few folks with a tin ear or ten dollar speakers that believe all players sound alike, take note of the DFX sound enhancement plug-in. It demonstrates that audio can be colored to suit the taste of any user (or programmer). Sound enhancement can be, and is, hardcoded into audio players. For an obvious example of this, take a look at "our own" Windows Media Player where you can actually see several built-in enhancements. Others are less obvious. Additionally, foobar offers an *18* band equalizer, further adding to it's ability to produce higher quality sound. At the risk of being called a "liar" I stand by my prior statement that IMO foobar2000 has the best audio quality of any player in my collection. And finally, as "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", foobar2000 has a very pleasing UI. If you would rather have a Mickey Mouse head with Play and Stop buttons to decorate your desktop, a different player would definitely be more to your liking.

Um, why are people still going on about how f2k doesn't have a 'pretty' interface?! Did anyone even visit the link I posted before? http://customize.org/foobar if you missed it the first time around. It DOES have a customizable, skinnable UI for wankers who like that sort of thing. Personally, I don't - but we really do need to check the plugins for f2k before we start claiming it looks crap yeah? I guarantee, use one of the skin UIs for it and it can look like a Vegas ho, just like Winamp or Sonique. Again I say: the best player out there, hands down, bold on, italics on, blinking text on, INCLUDING SKINNABLE UI. (deep sigh) bold off, italics off, blinking text off.

Hey f2k. Thanks for the link and the site Oh, the review... Foobar is the ultimate app for music (calling it a player is far short of it's capabilities.) Foobar is really intimidating right out of the box because it has soooo many options. If you just let the music play (get the plug-ins from somewhere like www.rarewares.com) you can forget the complexity knowing it will play. Work your way to audio nirvana from there. However, the interface is butt ugly and skinning the UI to really work well is a challenge for folks with little artistic or organizational imagination (me). It is probably not that hard once you do it one time, but it drives me nuts (I am mental.) It will convert, burn discs, play anything anyway you want it to sound (great for laptops) and just so much more. It is an investment in time that will just keep giving back. I recommend www.hydrogenaudio.com forum on Foobar as a great place to get help and really make Foobar do things you never dreamed of. If I got any of the links wrong, Google it up and you will see the correct ones. When you need a powerful, predictable audio app, you can always turn too Foobar and it's always free. It's an incredible piece of code and a lot of thanks to those who do all the wonderful things for the price of a beer.

I play flat. I don't like "pretty sound". That's for posers. And yes, when you play flat the majors do sound alike. And they SHOULD. Especially if you use ASIO / WASAPI. Now if you want to butcher your sound with "pretty pretty" garbage, that's your choice and your right. I kind of like to hear what the engineer and artist intended to the best of what my speakers can deliver (and trust me, they ain't ten dollar wh***s). FIVE stars despite the fact that the stock interface shipped by the author stinks.
