I've been using foobar2000 almost since the start of it and am still using version 0.8.3 because it does everything I want it to do. I have tried and the latest versions and while there are some improvements in features and overall performance, they have lost some of the things and changed some of the specific behaviours that make a difference to me. Probably a lot of it has to do with plugins and the fact that foobar2000 seems to change its plugin API with every release doesn't help it. I'm staying with v0.8.3.

The best gets better. The new Oscilloscope and Spectrogram are fantastic!

Fantastic music player. Feature requests include: 1) Listing and filtering on Ratings without requiring UI_Columns or UI_Panels. 2) Builtin CD Burning plugin or "Export Playlist To Burrrn" or something easy/simple/free. And that's about it. Again, awesome player that's not a resource hog like some (I'm looking at you iTunes and WMP).

To cut a long story short: foobar eliminates competition! It's been my default audio player for the past 2½ years.

Its a good program and it does its thing well, but I just don't use it. Not sure why this thing gets so much love. At least they have finally improved the default interface. It was terrible before. I still prefer to use Winamp because it just works the way I want it to. I can't find another player that just somehow works like I would expect. And one major thing keeping me from switching to another player is the minimal interface which I can have always on top of my window title bars, yet provides quick access to all the necessary features. I love this. I am sure I could probably get it from Foobar, but with way too much effort. And as for the sound quality, I am sure that upgrading my speakers would provide much more improvement than the software. And I am not about to do even that because I am no audiophile. I certainly don't think its a bad program (hence the 4 rating) but it certainly does not warrant the fanboy following it gets.

I have used this and I have removed it. I too am a person who likes winamp better as it does all that I need and want. I was never fond of this GUI or how it works. I have no idea why this software gets such good ratings and a following as it sure is no beauty. But it does work and does it well, just not for me I guess.

One you've got the Facets plugin installed, and have customized your layout to your liking (which can, admittedly, take some time the first time around), Foobar is the tits.

Granted, soundwise there may not be a lot of difference anymore between Winamp and foobar2000 at default settings. For the casual user Winamp certainly does everything and does it well. But the thing is, you have little control over what is happening under the hood. This is where foobar2000 comes in. You can tweak virtually everything, from tags over output up to design. Winamp is the prefab car that does everything it's supposed to do and foobar2000 is like that custom machine that you spend 2 years making in your garage and that is the envy of the neighborhood.

Excellent player. Not a Winamp hater here, but this is just better. Tabbed playlists, very customizable UI, very customizable global key commands, control over color and style, loads instantly, handles giant playlists (50,000+ songs with no problems here), plays without a hiccup while you play cpu intensive games, etc. No, you can't skin it to look like Hello Kitty's head or whatever, but it plays music extremely well.

When my vision went to hell over the last 20 months (I went form 20.25 to 20/400), this player allowed me to still enjoy music and see playlists thanks to its very customizable, if plain, interface and exceptional audio quality. The addition of context menus in Explorer and a volume control on the main interface were a Godsend. It is now my default player (yes, Roj now uses Foobar). It's EQ is superior to any other player as well. Well done PP - it matches (even exceeds) the hype. Now if only it was skinnable to offset the plain appearance... EDIT: Minus one star for a seriously DUMB omission of a feature that every player and its dog does: Automatic retrieval Of CD Title Information From FREEDB. C'mon people, this is almost as stupid as not having the volume control on the main interface and it took two years to get that. I'll expect this feature in the next beta. FOUR stars. Edit: I have been monitoring Foobar for some four (?) years now and I recall when it was OnlY Hype with No Substance. It has come a long way. I also know that those advances were anything but swift and it took a LOT of prodding for the dev to do the most elementary of logical things such as putting a volume control on the main interface. He grew the app into an audio powerhouse over time but he still needs to get a clue about user friendliness (I will concede he's getting there). So NO, I'm NOT kidding when I type comments like "I'll expect it in the next beta" - it should have been there several releases back. When common everyday features are omitted, it's difficult to excuse, especially given the lineage of this app - it's pretty long in the tooth. Because of that, you'd think that simple UI features that everyone takes for granted would be included but for example, the volume control, Explorer extensions and various other run-of-the-mill items are relatively shiny new additions to this app. This mindset has hampered its acceptance by users and it doesn't take

Still loving the Foobar2000. A GIANT thanks to Peter P.!! Roj, sorry to hear about the failing vision. Just a tip, though, when someone works hard to code and maintain awesome free software (or bad free software for that matter), comments like "I'll expect this feature in the next beta" come off ugly and unappreciative. I hope you were kidding.

Foobar is a player. To "I expect this in the next release" cd ripping is lame. Anybody that uses foobar should use eac to rip their disc. Foobar's cd ripping is just for convenience. THE best ripper is eac-period. At least it is easy-peasy to display cover art, and in general use it now. The, before, inability to show cover art by default is what kept me from using for quite a while
