PeerBlock 1.1.0 Release 518

PeerBlock by PeerBlock, LLC Screenshot PeerBlock Screenshot

PeerBlock is a new version of the popular Peer Guardian 2 software. It blocks "known bad" computers from accessing yours, for example governments, corporate entities, and those flagged for anti-p2p activities. It maintains the functionality of the original Peer Guardian 2 program, but includes fixes for various issues that remain unaddressed in the latest (~2 year old) version of PG2.

I couldn't get Peer Guardian to work for me. It kept crashing. I've been using PeerBlock for several days now with absolutely no problems. Thanks to the person taking up the cause and making this software work!

PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b (09/18/2005) works fine on my WinXP system. All releases of PG after that crash for me, though. The problem I'd like to see fixed is the agonizingly-slow, CPU-killing "Generating List Cache..." process. I've always hated that, and I know I'm not alone.

Works very well, was glad to see someone take up this great but aging program. No crashes and it does seem faster than the last PG release.

I've installed this on Windows 7 and I can highly recommend it. It's much much better than Peer Guardian. It's faster and hasn't crashed once like PG did on XP and W7. Like it a lot.

Been using for a week on Win7,previously the other versions were to flakey sometimes not starting and crashing. The only problem is not been able to get to auto-start.Seems to work well but if blocking all HTTP can cause problems opening some sites,as to be expected.Overal adds a good extra layer of extra security.

Doesn't work. "Peerblock is unable to load the packet filtering driver" immediately after installation.

Thank you for PeerBlock...It works much better and leaner than PeerGuardian 2...Nov 2005 build. For all those who had problems with Nov 2005 build of PG2 and reverted back to Aug 2005 build, try deleting the db files and try again. For some reason, the DB format is different between both and Nov version has a problem of corrupting the db file. Just deleting it once in a while keeps PG2 happy...but then if you have upgraded to PB, all's well again. :)

Wow! This application works great. I can't wait for the final. I sent in a donation to help these good folks to purchase a signed driver. I didn't have to, but this has been a long time in waiting.

When it works, it works great. When it doesn't work (which for me is 50% of the time) it states "Unable to load the packet filtering driver" - even after a fresh install, and refuses to start. PeerGuardian used to do this but they had some sort of tool which would reset the driver so it worked again. Peerblock doesn't have that. Solid 3 stars until they correct this recurring bug.

Indispensable and better then ever

Yea! This is great news. It installed without missing a beat no more uninstall first. I hear the developers and friends are having a little celebration in a bar near New York. I hope they have a great time, They sure did earn it. This is, so much, piece of mind. I love this jewl of a program A++ Forum linky: LATEST Public Release: PeerBlock 1.0

The most necessary piece of software... at least for me now:)

Has replaced PeerGuardian for me.

There's no way I'm using this instead of PeerGuardian 2.0 6b. That version of PG runs perfectly for me, and the only annoyance with it is the "Generating List Cache..." delay. (I do understand the reason for that delay.) PeerBlock not only has the same delay, it forces it upon me TWO times each time I start it, for no apparent reason. Sometimes it displays the "Generating List Cache..." notice even when I KNOW there have been no list updates. Also, each time I run PeerBlock, it displays a few "Allowed" connections, and then issues a notice that it won't display any more of them to save resources. Well, uhh, I have it configured not to display ANY "Allowed" connections, so why display them at all? The list editor has a GUI bug (at least when used at 120 DPI). Other, minor GUI bugs from PG (in the settings dialog) are still there. There is no (native) way to remove the PB driver if the application or system crashes, as there is with PG. Also, PG removes its driver automatically when it's closed. PB does not. So in short, from where I sit, there's nothing at all better about PB, and many things worse. BTW, I am running the latest STABLE version of PB. Well, I was, before I uninstalled it...

Yeah some PG builds were horrible, but I managed to find one that is very stable for me (it's reported in the About box as "PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b (09/18/2005)").

@emanresU deriseD Clicking off the 'Update Peerblock' option (the program update) greatly decreases loading time. I agree that a crash recovery facility should have been included although, unlike with PG2, I've yet to experience a Peerblock crash.

i have unchecked "update at startup" and checked "auto-update every (1) days" (which is applied to both list and program). i don't notice any delays. at least i never get to see that little update-window, that it would display when updating during startup. it's been truly a "set and forget" program in my experience.

The only thing missing is a Linux compatible version.
