Paint.NET by Paint.NET Team Screenshot Paint.NET Screenshot

Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.Paint.NET is freeware, but the team is accepting donations here.

I like the ease of use and multiple layers. Nothing I don't like about it. I have been using PDN for a few years now and I can't see using anything else. The effects from the forum is fantastic and always updated as well as PDN. It is not a CPU hog on my computer and it runs smooth on Vista x64. I highly recommend PDN!

"Wonderful for quick editing!" Its quick and easy, simple features like crop aren't complicated like in photoshop. Can't really think of any at the moment. I like to use this program for quickly putting the copyright on my photographs. Its wonderful.

DudeBoyz: First of all, .NET is the NOW of application development. Not the future, the NOW. Accept it and move on. Secondly, The GIMP is pure and utter garbage, rendered that way by a pathetic excuse for an interface that was designed by propeller-headed weenies FOR propeller-headed weenies - not humans. It is the equivalent of dropping a 442 engine block into a Lada. No one I know who uses Photoshop (including several professional graphics artists) would replace it with that ersatz. This program has both power and usability (something the GIMP cannot spell the "U" in) and is developed in a very credible application framework that is now standardized since two major Windows releases. It continues to grow, evolve and (again unlike the GIMP) enjoy interface enhancements. While no Photoshop replacement, it can easily hold its own against the GIMP or Paint Shop Pro. FIVE stars.

changelog? While this is a great program on its own, I question the usefulness of it. I have this, GIMP, and your standard MS Paint on Win 7. I ended not using this, cause if I want to do something serious, GIMP is more powerful despite the horrendous UI and MS Paint if it's just a printscreen and small quick text placement is more than enough. And then we have Photofiltre which is also as good (or more) as this and faster cause no .Net dependency. 3 stars for now.

"Wonderful Drawing Product" More functionality than the Paint application installed on most Windows machines VERY user friendly - no rtfm required Not the best photo editing capabilities - would like to see more in future releases

"Great program!" I love this program! It's easy to use and the layout is what it should be. I did make a donation on $12.00 because they deserve it! Would recommend this to any friend of mine. I wish that I had this program years ago. The major con is wasting my hard disk space with Microsoft's Paint! I do wish the help menu was in the program and not online. "Excellent Freeware!!" All Good. Great Software It is more like 9.55MB, not the posted 4.79... why? I don't know. But an excellent powerful tool. Download it anyway, well worth it and you will use it all the time IMHO.

"Does everything I need it to do" Layers, Free None to speak of

Wouldn't use anything else. Plus its dependence on .NET is a non-issue since .NET is kind of embedded in windows now and has been for a while.

This is a graphics app built by people who understand what 99% of us look for in our graphics apps - simple, powerful, efficient, and surprisingly refined. All the stuff you look for in an "everyday" graphics app is here ... and it works well. Like Paint Shop Pro, which once with the most amazing graphic shareware in the planet, Paint.net will surely one day be so popular, so good, some company will buy it for millions. And then ruin it. Such is the life and death of great things. Programs like Illustrator and Photoshop rarely justify their massive price tags for most of us .. though some of us need their specialized features from time to time. Even so, I can honestly say that 95% of the time, what I'm doing is pretty basic stuff ... levels, curves, hue and saturation adjustments, crops, working with GIFs, JPEGs, BMPs and PNGs ... which make up pretty much every graphic displayed on every website in the universe. Enter Paint.net. This is its millieu. And it serves it's purpose well. And even though Paint.net is technically "free" (though is is not open source) take the time to donate some bucks to it's creators and keepers via the getpaint.net website. They deserve it for this is the resurrection of the spirit of PSP. Yay! Updated on Jan 25, 2010 And by the way ... please don't ding a product with a 3 or 4 out of 5 stars, and then in your comments write things like "not sure yet" or "Sorry, no time to test yet.". Well if you're not sure or haven't tested yet then how can you even begin to offer review?

"Easy to use" Easy to use Lack of Filters I prefer Photo Scape - unfortunately, it does not work with Windows 7!! Hoping it soon will

"I don't believe it is what I wanted nor need." I really haven't used it much because I don't understand it. I don't like the fact that I have to go online to get help. I want a user's manual at my fingertips so I can search, try and learn at my leisure. A help resource should have been downloaded with the software.

"Not what I was looking for" Did some things well and easily for a 79yo relative Didn't do all the basics easily for above relative I've tried out PhotoScape which looks like it may do

"Mixed bag of tools" A wonderful program which uses minimal space. Very helpful in turning jpegs into gif images. But being an amateur, I haven't explored the program's full potential. Not at all crazy about the Help section online. I also wish the program had more image effects options.

"better than many programs that cost" though miss some features of some other expensive programs, this offers enough to be at least a great starting point for photo retouching and drawing. not much to say negative. program is a little sparse on extra editing features, and seems to lack a good clone feature.
