Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.Paint.NET is freeware, but the team is accepting donations here.

Very nice for a free product. Still needs more tools and features to replace others, but it is very helpful.

Great software & easy to use . I would like to see Outline objects plug-in in the next Beta release

This is a great program... I've been using it since it first became available and seen how it has evolved. Issues/bugs are fixed pretty quick and having in mind this is a FREE app, that was designed to replace the Paint application included in Windows, you get an amazing set of features. Keep the good work!

Pretty and usefull application. One of the very limited .net applications that work as they should. I think this may be the exception that confirm the rule: .net is pathetic...

Excellent program all the way around, and I always look forward to the new features in each release. It's easy to use, and it's generally fast and stable. I'm a huge fan of the fact that the default format is PNG, since JPG image quality degrades over time, and it's just as compatible with GIF and JPG formats (unless you use transparency and IE6, but seriously, it's time to upgrade browsers already).

Wonderful stuff, if a bit limited in scope, but I've had major issues with installing the new version, and nothing on their forums helped much, and it was finally solved by installing an older version and then a newer over it. I suspect it's phanthom of the .NET opera of really bad ideas from our beloved software tyrant, erm I mean giant, sorry.

Don't mess with the best ;-) Simply, but powerful - and it's free! Absolutely MUST HAVE!

Absolutley Fantastic, Freeware that (in due course) might even take on the mighty photoshop. Keep up the good work:)

And that's worth giving it 1/5? Get some perspective!

Still awesome though I would like for them to have an option keep the ratio when resizing manually as well as better text support. Also, worth nothing that being beta, this is program suffers from crashes when using 3rd party plugins. So if you use a lot of plugins, it's best to use the stable.

I actually prefer Paint.NET to Gimp.

This is tool, that can do virtually everything (no kidding) that Photoshop is doing - if you have the knowledge and creativity for it; is free and open source. I don't care if it does not support magnetic lasso, or other small features that can be accomplished with other edit operations... for me is 5 out of 5. Good job guys!

Great program... but why bother zipping it for a savings of ~6K? Silly-Wilies!

Me too! I hate the interface of the GIMP! I am not a newbie - I use Photoshop at work and I have worked with Paint Shop Pro for almost a decade (till Corel has gayed the app)! Paint.NET - 6/5!

Paint.Net is the best free photo editor that I've used. I recommend it to everybody. There is no way I'd ever recommend GIMP to the average user. Like the guy, I also prefer Paint.Net to GIMP.

It's a very capable, full featured application. However, those comparing it to Photoshop are making a huge error. Photoshop does have many features that Paint.net lacks, namely support of the ubiquitous PSD format that is essential when using PAINT.net for commercial reasons and exchanging files with other people in the industry. It's for the same reason that any office suite must be backwards compatible with Microsoft Office. If you read the plans for v4.0, you'll note that upcoming features are all features present in Photoshop and features that are widely used by professionals: http://www.getpaint.net/roadmap.html The PAINT.net team has made a fantastic product, and I think that they are doing a wonderful job of providing an alternative to Photoshop that is a more viable option to GIMP.

Excellence that keeps getting better. GIMP killa. FIVE stars.
Rated 30/50 by skidmarks at Apr 23, 2008
When is it going to support twain drivers/scanners? With that feature, it's freeware perfection!
Rated 50/50 by And| at Apr 23, 2008
@roj How can it be a "Gimp kill" when it only comes to Microsoft windows? It would be a gimp killa, if it came to linux and mac :)

Already beats photoshop if you just want a light editor that is fast. I don't want a bloated heavy photoediting app. If it heads that way I bail.
