OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

IT IS EASY TO USE WITHOUT BEING A COMPUTER NERD It is the same as a lot of other programs - you get the run around instead of support when things go wrong. Faq 's don't have the difficult questions and you can't email them with a full description of your problem. I can't access now or re download I was fooled by a spoofer who claimed to be a part of Microsoft to allow him to fix a opening problem with a photo program. He/they took over my PC and said it was full of viruses which he (said) went ahead and fixed. I paid him online and then foujnd he hadn't fixed anything - I still had the original problem plus a lot more which included Open Office org; I can't open my Open Office documents and I can neither access the program nor complete a new download. I am now a mug in a mess. I checked the internet today and found these people are known spoofers. The photo program has a free download but I can't complete thaeither without error messages so i am out of luck there also

It's free! It can open and make files for M.S. Office. It has a lot of convenient tools, options, etc, just like M.S. Office. It lacks a few(maybe 1 or 2 as far as I've noticed) M.S. Office features. Otherwise, I find it competent.

3.2.1 final seemed rock solid and working well. This is tweaky, and the font thing mentioned earlier is disturbing. ANYTHING that screws up your fonts = Bad News. That said, for me on XP, OpenOffice 3.2.1 is just awesome. But, right off the bat, this new release seems less than it should be. Yes, not a final product, but to go from 3.2.1 to this is not what I expected. I hope they suck it up and get it done right. It's still a great app, and I'll go 4 instead of 3 (I'd go 3.5 if I could) but that is a pretty close call.

Price and the features seems just like MS Office that I have used for at least 10 years! Will not work on the Motorola Droid; the best of the smartphones untilf Android 2.2. Contacted Motorola & Verizon and neither could advise of when software would be updated. Why are 2 such huge so uninterested in GREAT Customer Service??? OpenOffice is great and full of features just like MS Office. I have been able to learn the program / acclimate myself with the necessary routines necessary to make it formulate everything that MS OIffice does. I made the move because I finally got tired of updating all of my computers in my office so that alll could open files from another computer. I would purchase a new coimputer and a new copy of Office and then no one with an older version could open files created on the new machine with new version of MS Office and then I would have to purchase a new version for all the other computers. On to OpenOffice where the updates are free as well as the original version. I no longer purchase MS Office with my new machines. Just download the latest version of OpenOffice when I buy a new commputer! Bill Gates and crew has just had one too many updates and newer versions of all of Microsoft Operating Systems and Software! A challenge to Microsoft, create a version that there will be no need to update or buy the next creature for like 10 yers; can you do it Bill Gates and Company???

As near as I can tell, this suite of applications provides everything MS Office does. In many ways it's better. Which, makes me wonder why we continue to subject ourselves to Microsoft's control in the marketplace? The only app lacking is a comparable program to Outlook.

Does virtually everything that Microsoft Office does.....but....FREE!! If I was to be REALLY picky, the interface is not quite as slick as Microsoft, but barely worth mentioning. After yoiu have downloaded your security software, this should be the next programme you download....BRILLIANT, and did I mention....IT'S FREE!!

Can't beat the price, and you still get a professional, full-featured software suite on top of it all. Would be worth it even if it had a price tag. Opens Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. And you get to feel like you are sticking it to the man. Writer doesn't handle envelopes well. Database is somewhat cumbersome and not as suitable for developers as commercial packages. You might be tempted to download it just to stick it to M$ but that really sells the package short if that is all you see in it. It is really a great package that stands on its own merits, and would compare well even if it were sold as a direct competitor to commercial packages. The fact that you get to stick it to M$, use an excellent software suite, AND not spend a dime while doing so makes this download a complete no-brainer.

Works great and it's free!!!!! What cons????? It's everything anyone needs. If your family & friends don't have Open Office, enlighten them.

Open Office is user friendly It's absolutely free. There are times it's not interchangeable with MO.

Every MS Office .doc file I have has opened as it was originally saved. It keeps asking if I want to save to same format every time I alter a document. I recently had to reboot my computer. When I tried to reload MS Office Pro it would not accept the previous authorization key. I doubt I will have that problem with this program.

I have LOVED this program since downloading it last week. It has met all my needs and gone above what I was expecting. I have yet to find a con to this program.

Smooth and responsive, the OO products are easy to use and very professional. I can save files in ".doc" format so everyone with Word can read them! So far, there is nothing I do not like.

I've used all the other "popular", expensive programs and this is a more than adequate to replace all of them! Nothing at all

Draw is a Visio work alike and the rest of the tools all work together like MS-Office should have worked but free and portable Alot of microsoft extras wont work, but I didn't need 95% of them anyway I will be moving all my personal docs to openoffice till other free access software works the same and become truly portable google docs is limite on function and features but this product has it all.

everything some people don't accept this form great

It's free, which is good for people who can't afford the premium products. Layout is similar to Office, just not as user-friendly Changes are not as easy to make with Open Office as they are in Microsoft Office. Some tools are hidden and you have to find them to use them. Overall, not as user-friendly as I would like it to be I like this product because it is free and open-source. It is fairly easy to use, but not as user-friendly as I would like for it to be. I make databases on the fly and get started entering data and then realize I need another column right in the middle of the database. It's not easy to do with Open Office. I think that I will like it better once I get used to it and figure out some of the secrets.
