OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

price, performance the download is huge! Before downloading, I have read many comments here and became apprehensive about the whole idea. In the end, I installed it anyway, and now find some of the reviews here incorrect:1. It works on my Windows 7 just fine2. It loaded up under 3 seconds .... and that's on the cheapest laptop MSI makes!3. It did not crash once yet. This is a good start.

Generally a good replacement product for MS Office. And its free with updates !! The spreadsheet is not so user friendly like MsExcel. I will recommend this anyway to anyone.

Nothing at all. Slow to open docs and crashed whenever I updated links or saved a document. As much as I hate MS, I can't use this.

runs all the main word processing packages from one source, easy to use and great results, easy conversion of formats Temp file error keeps causing it to crash, having problems clearin it up because the temp file is empty and won't delete great package, recommend it

Free Software; no strings attached. Professional performance; fast, powerful, efficient. Complete; nothing left out for your everyday needs. Compatible. Too many configuration options makes it difficult to try them all; you will feel intimidated under such display of power at your fingertips. Unsurpassed price-performance ratio with a great interface and lots of frills available. Go get it NOW.

Relatively easy to use. Often ,with a new document, using the spread sheet formate, have to manipulate the system to get a printed copy, after reviewing the page split. Software is in daily use as I'm trying to set up a small business for my wife.

I've been following OpenOffice for a long time now, I think since it's initial public releases for Windows. My biggest complaints were speed; OpenOffice was so slow that it was unbearable to use, and MS Office Compatibility; there was always some quirk that would create incompatibilities between using OpenOffice and MS Office. With the release of this version both issues have been resolved to my satisfaction. Speed is more than acceptable for me now and I rarely encounter any compatibility issues now. I know there may still be some compatibility issues, but for me and my family, we do not seem to be running into them now. I have since uninstalled my old MS Office 2000 which I have kept on using because I didn't want to upgrade to the newer more bloated versions. I was so close to purchasing MS Office 2007 too! Now I am so glad that I did not. I am also so very glad that OpenOffice didn't adopt the Ribbon style toolbars that everyone seems to be going nuts for these days. I can't stand the Ribbon bars and I despise them. Give me a title bar, a menu bar and the tool bars that allow me to flow quickly through my work. OpenOffice has come a very very long way. If you don't need all the higher end features of MS Office, then OpenOffice is all you'll ever need.

Seems to have everything I will ever need. And, unlike MS Office products, it is compatible with all versions of MS Office products, and requires no learning curve because its interface is so similar to Office 2000. And the price is right. Nothing to dislike so far, but have only used the word processor so far and not heavily. I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. I was told that Office 2000 wouldn't work on it unless I also bought and installed the Pro upgrade add-on with its "virtual XP" for an extra $100 and a long installation process. Windows 2000 installed on it without problems, however, so I returned the upgrade. But suddenly Office 2000 stopped working properly, and all of the files I had opened with Windows 7 were totally corrupted. I suspect that Microsoft did that in one of its woopsdates. Reviews of Office 2007 indicated both a long learning curve and incompatibility with earlier versions without a special conversion tool.So I sold the laptop and got a new computer with XP. But after installing Office 2000 on it I was unable to install its Service Pack 2 and any of the following woopsdates for it. Rather than going through another hassle with Microsoft products, and spending more money, I tried OpenOffice3 and have been very pleased. I hardly know I'm using a different word processor, and shouldn't have to worry about compatibility problems with future versions as I would with MS products.

It is just terrible that Oracle bought StarOffice. I downloaded OOo 3.2.1, tested it and uninstalled it, reverting back to OOo 3.2.0. The new release is neither faster nor better than the previous one, but its start-up window is sterile and ugly, decorated with Oracle's abominable logo.

God I hate this software. I'd rather pay for using MS Office than use OpenOffice for free.

Familiar interface similar to other office suites, makes it easy to find thingsBeen using it for 5 years, seems to have all the features I needStays up to dateOpen source and free Wish there was an online or cloud feature. I haven't always been successful uploading to Google Docs using the native file format for Open Office and worked around it by saving the files with MSOffice file formats. I am self-employed and I work with several small businesses. I don't need all the bells and whistles that come with the expensive office suites. Open Office does everything I need it to do. It also does a great job filling the needs of the small businesses that I work with. The spreadsheets and word processing programs do everything I expect. The menus and interface are intuitive and similar to the expensive office suites, so it's easy to find your way around if you've been using one of the other suites for a while. The program suite is kept up-to-date and new features are added from time to time, and this project has a large community supporting it, so I expect it will continue to be a great project and produce great applications for years to come.
