OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

I really try to like it and evaluate it every 6 months but OOo got so outpaced by MS Office that it's no longer an option. If you have a couple of equations in a text it still gets dead slow. No SmartArt. Hideous interface. Hideous looking graphs. No noteworthy spellchecker. I acknowledge it's free but MS Office H&S is so cheap now that this is now longer an argument. One also has to consider its prospects when changing to its OpenDocument format: OOo now has as little as 20 developers remaining and future support by Oracle is uncertain. MS Office has how many developers? Maybe 500 and support by MS is out of question. Unfortunately not recommended.

"perfect, free" compatible with mso documents, slightly different than mso but easy to use. would be great for anyone who has to do school projects or for keeping track of bills etc you can run this program from a flash drive on any computer the presentation program does not have as good of effects or transistions, but it is a free program so i cant complain too much free, lots of features, comparable to expensive mso. versions of this can be run off a flash drive or sd card etc. did i mention free?

"Simply the best!!" It is very similar to Microsoft Office and it is FREE!!!! I like everything about this software! Almost every Office program is included in this software, Word, Spreadsheet, Access, Powerpoint, Draw, Math. You can do samethings that you would do with MS Office and it's free!!!

"Fully functional office suite" Compatible with Office, very functional, easy to use Some compatibility issues with new Office formats like .pptx (as opposed to old .ppt format) Why pay for Microsoft Office suite when you can get something just as good (or even better) for free?

1.) It's Free--You can make a donation to help fund the work too, which is a plus. 2.) You can report bugs and other problems to them, so you're part of the building process to make Open Office better Does have some compatibility issues with WordPerfect documents, but that can be easily fixed by the beta testers and programmers. If you're a small business, and don't want to get stuck with Microsoft, Download Open office. As I have said, I've used this for years since 1.x... Updated on Jan 23, 2010 Openoffice does come standard with some Linux operating systems (Ubuntu Desktop edition and OpenSolaris are two I have seen) but you do have to learn how to update them.

"Best free Office clone out there" The obvious, it's free...until Microsoft just includes Office with PCs for free like it should (seriously who wants to buy Word? It's so common I can't bring myself to pay for it...) Some compatibility problems opening Word docs, but otherwise great program

"Excellent alternative to Microsoft Office." The program has many features and extensions are available for added functionality. It's much like MSOffice in many ways but it's free as the air we breathe!! :D It might concern some that there is no equivalent to Microsoft Outlook .There are also problems with opening Microsoft Office files, such as formatting issues etc... btw.... FontWork can be selected with keeping in "CTRL", I experienced some difficulty with this initially =). Overall I'd highly recommend this program! (:

it is easy to use. It's free which is better than Corel or Microsoft Office. For a simple Word document it works wonderfully. my one complaint is their interface they need to modernize it. Otherwise they will lose business to Google's free program. if you're a small business and all you do is Word documents or simple spreadsheets this works just fine. If you need something more complicated than you do need to buy one of the Word programs. For the ordinary homeowner and student is also excellent product. Students can use it to do their papersand it is free which is handy for student.

Top rate. It does 90% MS office offer for free, and does not infect your computer with +10mb useless registry entries, useless components and such crap. Small, and free is the way I like it. It only lacks an Outlook replacement, but unless you need to use a Exchange mailbox, that is not an issue. I would startup faster, but comparing against $400 suite, well, Open Office is gold!

"Great replacement to MS Office" 1. It has everything that MS Office has2. Good extensions Calc ie the Excel replacement is good for normal users but not for Excel super-users Rather than paying for MS Office it is better to use Open Office as it is free and has everything that a normal user will want from an office suite.

3.2 does load faster, thank the gods. For those needing an outlook replacement, Thunderbird 3 + Lightning does the trick.

"So far, so good!" Easy and free! Haven't found any yet

"Fantastic product that's FREE" Save's a lot of money as it's free - for home/student use absolutely ideal. For business use, only because of compatability issues, I would currently still reccomend Office.

"This product works better than my expensive WORD 2007" See above...and in addition to the pluses I mentioned before, it is free! There are no things that I don't like. Very professional office suite. It's good, it works better than WORD 2007, and it is free.

Fantastic startup. Now comparable to Office 2010 Beta! I'd say 1.5 seconds to load any OO app now, uncached, and .25 seconds cached. I really don't like what Microsoft has done with Outlook 2010. The tabs at the top needlessly putfunctions I frequently need on different "pages" so it's actually slowed me down quite a bit. There's little reason for me, personally and professionally, to stay with Expen$ive Microsoft Offi$e.
