OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

"Excellent freeware" Very reliable, well supported alternative to MS. Particularly like the PDF support None I can think of

"Some work, some don't - terrible support" Free, no other redeeming qualities. Base did not work at all -- would not launch. Wrote issue ticket and was closed without resolution. The old ostrich in the sand scenario. Pay the money and get something that works.

"Lovely programme" It does all I want Don't have any

"Very good free program." Free and doesn't have the issues of MS. Very slow to load and crashes sometimes. The ability to use at home without paying and then take to office where my company has pay for MS Office is a plus.

"Works like a charm" Free - Free - Free. Seems to read all Office files I have tried so far. Many other file types also. And did I mention it's FREE. Nothing so far. Quick download and install. Doesn't take a lot of memory. Imports lot of different file types. And free.

"A great resourse." Free. I put it on my kids computers too. They don't need to use my one machine with paid program (MS Office). nine so far. Great if you need office rarely, but you need it all over the house. I'm impressed and trying to use it more. An office prog. that works on my Windows machines and Linux machines.

OpenOffice is a great office program and decerves 5 stars. None so far. This is a great office program and best of all it is free,my Grand-Daughter bought a new computer and was disappointed to discover Microsoft Office was no longer loaded with Windows as she uses it a lot,so I talked her into trying OpenOffice, she now confirms it has everything she needs and is an excellent program. So if anyone is needing an alternative Office program this is the one. So thumbs up to OpenOffice.org.

"all in one office suite (open office . org)" familiar lay out lots of choices and its compatible with most officeware and its free there are alot of features i have not played with fully but getting pdf files with manuals was welcome and it basicly smokes microsoft there are alot of features if you haven,t used this type of software before it can be overload. i like this product very much i must confess to a learning curve with some of the programs but i liked the entire experience and would recomend it to anyone who,s fingers grace the keyboard

"Wonderful software, does everything MS does and more." I talk to writers and tell them to use Open Office. It's a smaller file than MS and very flexible. I do everything I need to do in OO. I have two new authors I'm working with who now use OO exclusively. Yea! Everyone doesn't have it, so I have to go through the extra step of making a MS Doc and sending it, then opening up the return doc and saving as an Open Office. Luckily, I have that capability. Everyone should have OO, life would be easier. We should all use OO and let MS write notes to each other. When I upgraded my computer, my MS wouldn't work anymore. the new computer came with a teaser that would cost me as much as the computer. Fooey! I want my Open Office!

"great product does everything for word processing" Just as comprehebsive as Word for windows and it is free to use nothing bad about the program

Rated 50/50 by adgadg4 at Dec 13, 2009

Does all I need None for me Great -- price is right, allows me to do everything I need in a suite and updates are free as well. After using Word and the various suite iterations since 1.0, I am more than glad to relegate it and them to where they belong -- where someone else is paying.

"very clear and easy" I like it very much, all applications are very understandable and reasonable to use. To compare the microsoft office with OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 I must say that microsoft office is a little bit complicated. There is nothing wrong with this software

"Does what the name brand does, and it's free." Handles e-mail attachments adroitly . . . for FREE! Seldom upgrades with patches -- only with the whole shebang; even with cable, that's a sizable chunk of download time. For those of us with restricted incomes, or for those who insist on paying as little as possible to the MS empire, Open Office is the answer. Not many e-mail attachments remain enigmas when Open Office is around.

Wow! Impressed with the speed improvemet over 3.1! And many new nice improvements ovelall: http://www.openoffice.or.../features/3.2/beta.html Sure OOo has long way to go to catch MSO, but it's free. Donate, so they can employ more developers.

Hilbert, Glad you enjoy your Microsoft program. If i had to pay for one similar, i would go for Corel's Office Suite. At least OO users can still use whatever updated version of their program to open their files. For free of course! OO has come a long way and is being used in many places for free. Free as in freedom. MSN or Corel will never give you that pleasure.
