OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

Openoffice, y'know, its' OK. it'll do the job. But in windows, it's got an fugly interface (linux version seems to be nicer somehow) it's slow to start, really slow. and stupidly large. We're on version 3, yet I still can't pick and choose which parts of office I want to download - I'm only EVER going to using the word processing portion, yet I have to download the whole suite. - and then I have to download the whole thing again with up bug fix, and minor update. It's free, it's good, but it's still way behind in a lot of ways. All in all I much much prefer Office 07, for day to day word processing, I think abiword is better, at least it's faster and visually nicer to use. Kword (linux) is v. nice too. I'd use openoffice if I couldn't use any of those first. But try it, you might love it.

It's still a wee bit slow to start in Windows, but that's the only bad thing I can say about it. With a simple add-on it even edits PDFs now, in addition to creating them. There's no two ways about it, this is awesome. Calc still lags a little way behind Excel, but for 99.99% of purposes there's nothing in it, and Writer is quite the wordprocessor of the moment, with some pretty impressive DTP capabilities.

"Its great!" Free, easy to use and powerful! It also can read those pesky Word Formats! Looks like it came from Windows '98.

No painful registration battle. MS alternative; does not assume typical user is a thief! Readily interchangeable with the dominant formats from Redmond. And, much easier to use. Occasional Crash but documents in process are recoverable. The Open Office Suite includes 6 Major Components: Base, Calc, Draw, Impress, Math, and Writer. In Writer, the Word Processor, the user is freed from the Template-Driven Style Book invented by MS. One can make the document in any style desired. I have used the Word Processor (Writer) and the Spreadsheet (Calc) to create useful documents that are compatible and interchangeable with MS Office equivalents. In Writer, one can SAVE AS HTML, even as *.PDF, offering great flexibility to the user. On the other hand, users can create documents that are as complicated and impressive as one may desire. This is an economical way to experiment with Personal Computer potential; the expense of learning is nil. The download is free, installs readily ( We use it with XP and VIsta machines), search for OPENOFFICE.ORG and all of the details are on display. The download is NOT for Dial-Up setups; a CD is available from various sources for a fee (No, one cannot just download a single component.) Updates for the Suite are posted on the screen; those can be cranky. === When I first started feeding and caring for a PC in 1986, I was warned by IBM sales that use of any other company software would void the IBM warranty on the XT. It was with great trepidation that I purchased Lotus 1-2-3 and installed it. Overcoming the fear of being different is a hindrance to the advancement of learning. (I still have the Lotus 1-2-3 Ver 5.0 disks but, ironically, IBM now owns that application and will not allow me to use it. any more.) Thus, I share the angst you may feel if you try this alternative program.

"Excellent." Its free. It generally works well. It runs on windows 7with no problems so far. (although I only use Calc and Writer) There were problems with tables in Writer on a previous version but so far so good with 3.1.1.

"Good replacement for MSOffice Suite." Simple and direct to use. Can not grasp the data base... If you do not want to invest money in MSOffice Suite or others every so often then I would recommend OpenOffice.

"I like it and it is free" It is free, easy to use. Great help. I can always find the answers I need. Sometimes I wish it was fancy like the new Microsoft windows. But then It does what I need it to do. No cons.. This is a great program, I love it and use it everyday. I thank open office for sharing it with everyone.

"excellent program" just like ms office none nada zip

"Very credible alternative to MS Office." As a functional easy to use package it serves it's purpose very well. Begs the question "why buy MS Office"! Lack of intergrated mail manager to complete the packages rival to MS Office, apart from that not much can be said for a free product that works well. No long explianation needed. You can jump stright from Ms Office to Open Office with a minimal learning curve.

"Appears to be an excellent program." Simple format for those who aren't as computer savvy as some. Haven't used it yet so can't speculate as to what might be wrong with it.
