OpenOffice.org is the open source project through which Sun Microsystems is releasing the technology for the popular StarOffice productivity suite. It is an international office suite that will run on all major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format. It establishes the necessary facilities to make this open source technology available to the developer community.

OO has finally added a grammar check along with spelling. OO will also open docx files generated by the new MS Office. Alas, all the growth hasn't added a thesarus yet. The early versions of OO were a lot faster, both in opening the program and in execution. Unfortunately open source software seems to turn into bloatware after a time. Earlier versions had a small footprint and overhead. Being somewhat of a dinosaur in the computer world, I am still a great fan of Ami Pro and Lotus 1-2-3. To date, I haven't found a spreadsheet program that had the formatting functionality of Lotus. Open Office is a good program for those who don't want to spend a lot of money on a commercial package and its constant upgrades. It remains a very good option for the average user, the learning curve is almost non-existent. The only caveat is the download size is expanding at an alarming rate, so I wouldn't recommend it for dial-up users.

OpenOffice does almost everything that MSOffice Professional does (and then some) and is free of charge. How can anyone beat that kind of bargain? OpenOffice is not quite as elegant and efficient at times as MS Office; it takes longer to load than MS Office and the interface is a bit clunkier, but nothing that can't be easily lived with. For anyone who needs the sophistication and functionality of MS Office but who either can't afford MS Office or is unwilling to shell out the megabucks for MS Office Pro, OpenOffice is the perfect answer. It is a real testament to the hard work and dedication of those individuals who have developed it for the OpenSource community project. I use it even though I also have MS Office as well. It also comes in a portable version for use on your flash drive!

"For someone in my situation, can't be beat." Does everything I need for my Spreadsheet and Document projects. None so far. For moderate users of spreadsheets and documents, I don't know how anyone could expect to find something better at this price (free).

"It's a FREE office.." FREEWARE!!! It has all the MS Office apps, but FREE! Writer is very similar to Word, so it's very easy to use. It also has a built-in "Export to PDF" feature. It has a smaller footprint compared to MS Office. FREE FREE FREE. None so far. It's the total MS Office replacement.

"Perfect free answer for home office work." Will do almost everything that Ms Office does but for FREE. Bit slower and not quite as slick as Ms. Needs 3rd party software like Secunia to advise when security patches are required. If you've already splashed out for Word, Excel and Access etc; then you've got slightly better apps, but if not then Open Office is an extremely good FREE alternative.

For me it is better than 'Word'. Quick and easy to understand. Pressed the wrong answer(discard or save) and lost the whole manuscript once when there was an error with the program. This needs more safety features and better explanation. It is a good program, it runs really well. A little slow on start-up on my computer, anyway. Use it every day. Had good feedback from other users about the Open Office. Good thesaurus, never let me down. Correction of spelling very helpful and gives a range of options. Only a couple of times did I get a spelling correction that was not helpful.

"A replacement for Microsoft Office" Can compose and edit documents and save to word format. Does not align in print as well as it should. Has a difficult time inserting basic items such as images. Will do for a poor mans office.

"Complete productive package" Let you complete all of your work seamless. I have used only the text application and it preformed great. If the other applications are designed the same way es the word processor, there is nothing out here to compare. None that I can think of at this time. A complete package of productive applications for free.

"It is great and easy to use," Each of the modules have a great feel when using with all the featues of expensive products. I tend to use the database most and I have it more the adequate for my use. Really cannot think of anything at this stage.

"Very good Word alternative" Plenty of features, quick to load, very similar layout to word, great price(free) does not save in new word 07 format, only 97-03. not as flashy or stylish as office 07. For the price, this is well worth any sacrifices you might make. the features are all there, supports numerous formats and is much quicker than word.

"seems to work well with Windows XP" Not too elaborate(my 14 year old uses it). Basic enough for beginners to make good use of it. Only problem seems to be the slow load up, but that could be my overloaded system
