Miranda IM 0.9.4

Miranda IM by Miranda Screenshot Miranda IM Screenshot

Miranda IM is a multi protocol instant messenger client for Windows. It is designed to be resource efficient and easy to use. It uses very little memory, requires no installation and can easily be carried around on a single floppy disc. The goal of this project is not to duplicate the functionality of AOL's ICQ Client, but to design a client that has the basic features that is designed for mouse-less operation with a small memory requirement.

some guy: "after 3 billion releases it still looks the same lol" Yes, it still looks the same, but many features is new or rewriten. And Miranda look. Miranda appearance is based on the skins, so skin can adjust each as needed

Blaxima "Giving something a good or poor rating based solely on your preference towards a piece of software rather then the release in question is just foolish." Rather like using a rating criteria that has nothing at all to do with the actual software, you mean? Really, if actually being able to differentiate between a beta and an RC, and why that makes a difference, is the definition of misinformed, then colour me donkey any day of the week, twice on weekends. The developers have included a 64-bit version with the newest cycle. I can't say I'm convinced that it's really needed, but if nothing else it'll put a stop to the endless requests on the forum. There have been some teething issues, though, so no doubt another beta will be along soon, much to the chagrin of the unwashed BN masses.

you can have as many accounts as desired easy to use easy to install different status images comfortable and light Needs to be lighter so you can handle as many as you want and do not have weight issues with your OS Crashes and causes crashes when mixed with Mozilla, FB, Skype and NOrton Does not connect eveyr single account automatically it is a good, easy to use, simple program, but there is no way to contact designers and explain problems, if you need to lughten the weight of your software so you will be able to handle all your needs no problem, then you might want to check other options and leave this one as the very last resort. That is, until it has been put on a diet. Lemme know when that happens

Well it's back to a buggy mess again. I've never had releases be so hit and miss like they have been ever since the version 8 builds although the latter ones of 7 were heading that way too. The biggest problem(aside from the bugs) is that with this being such a bare bones program it, much like firefox, NEEDS 3rd party plug-ins to become more functional. That means that if the developers of the plug-ins stop developing you might be out of luck and that has become the case here. The old plug-ins are causing crashes and unfortunately they're not being updated which leaves Miranda thin. While I've always appreciated the complete customization and lightweight nature of Miranda it has now become not really worth the hassle. Targaff, I'm sure you feel you've made a point but I doubt that anyone but yourself knows what the hell it is because I know certainly can't decipher your gibberish to see one. Looking at your review history however makes things clear. You are argumentative and seem to be seeking some kind of attention on here because you aren't getting any in your real life and now you won't be getting anymore from me either. Have fun with your pompous self.

pros? um installs quick? Setup accounts is confusing not user friendly. Put account info in and nothing does not connect. Stick with the original messengers such as yahoo aim icq msn, unless you dont care about using a webcam and other features. I yet to find a program that combines all services and still allows for webcam or voice features tyilion doesnt and neither does digsby.

Easy to setup No-bloat program Nice and simple to use Extendable via plugins Heavily customizable. Dockable at the side of the screens. Lack of auto-login if disconnected. (or i certainly haven't found the plugin for it yet) Shiny fans probably won't like this. (I am not one) And there are no sounds setup at the start either, so you will need to install these and select them on your own. There are plenty of sound packs on the website though. Docking can be problematic occasionally with: Fullscreen apps causing other windows to go behind it after exiting full screen Dragging the window to make it larger causes it to jump around like crazy. Miranda is still in beta, but it is updated quite frequently

The program does what it says it will. Setup is not easy, nor is it intuitive. It's really a third place contender in the specific game it's playing, try Digsby or Trillian for a better experience. After much trial and tribulation trying every multi-protocol IM client on the net, the suggestion I have for the person looking for one is to try out Digsby. It's been winning a lot of awards lately, and it does exactly what you want this program to do, but it is new and goes through a lot of early stage development still. A close second place alternative would be Trillian, which has been around for ages. Trillian handles Twitter better. Both of the aforementioned handle many more protocols without need of plugins than Miranda does, forcing Miranda into third place, in my opinion, anyway.

Blaxima: I have the utmost admiration for someone who is willing to admit in public that they're not smart enough to understand what another person is saying. To make it simpler for you, however: the release schedule is irrelevant to the quality of the software, and shouldn't factor into the grade, particularly if you don't appreciate why such a schedule was adopted. For that matter, the quality and maintenance of third-party plugins are equally irrelevant: when you use a program with a plugin design of this nature you do so (or at least should do so) full in the knowledge that contributions by third parties are extensions, not key components. Blaming Miranda for something that is beyond its control is like blaming your car because the road has potholes. Miranda at its CORE is extremely stable and highly customisable with minimal hassle, and while it's not quite so small as it once was it remains the best of the bunch.

I'm rather happy with Pidgin, so it's difficult to use something less pretty

Clean, light, small, stable: the way every instant messenger shound be.

@johnk119 You don't know what your talking about, because I said the same thing when I used Miranda for the first time, but I found out that with some plugins it is so customizable, you just need to get the right plugins and go through the settings. The best chat client ever, and its getting better all the time, they also have a great forum and very helpful. 5 years using those crappy Yahoo and MSN :( I want them back.

My favourite IM client. Free, fully customizable; plugins support, ... takes some time to configure

Rated 50/50 by Artem S. Tashkinov at Aug 7, 2010

To the previous commentator: There are other clients out there... bloated, ad-ridden, malware rife

Rated 20/50 by dsp_418 at Aug 7, 2010

Good client but I'm sick of wasting my time looking for the right plugins, customize it and get crazy with the options. There are other clients out there.... edit: bloated like what? like Pidgin for example?

I have my gripes. It's not perfect, but it's the best I've found. Trillian is more than I need, and you have to pay for the good features. Miranda is running, using peak memory of 7.5MB, and I'm connected to 5 messaging services with several tabs open. I have had some issues with the contact list flashing white over and over. There's no real way to block requests from people not on your list, so sometimes I get spam invites. I'm sure there's a few other things I can't think of at the moment. Overall though, it's still a great, clean interface, with tons of options.

none at all. My computer would not recognize this software or open the program, after i downloaded it. My computer refused to open the program and would not recognize it. So i had to uninstall it. End of story!
