µTorrent by Ludvig Strigeus Screenshot µTorrent Screenshot

uTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients.

1. The Port forwarding configuration and speed settings ARE automatic. uTorrent supports uPnP auto-configuration like most other modern clients. It also has automated speed guides for adjusting connection settings and built-in methods for testing connectivity. I dont' see how it could be easier, and it's CERTAINLY just as easy as any other major client out there, and anyone telling you differently has no idea what they're talking about. 2. The third-party search options are still present in the stable release. They just aren't in the betas. I'm looking at them right now. That would suck if they removed them from the next stable release, though, even if I don't use the search at all myself. 3. Low resource usage may not be important to SOME people, but it is important to many, many others. Nothing anyone can say will alter this fact. One can dismiss it, but one can't credibly claim it's some sort of negative. 4. I have never seen a comprehensive comparison of clients show that the newer versions of uTorrent are slower. In fact, it has more ways to reach out and find peers than some other popular clients, which would make it faster in theory. Make all the claims about the speed tests you like, but you know as well as I that they were highly subjective. Others aren't seeing the same results. I, for example, routinely start a torrent only to have it immediately jump up to 1.5 megaBYTES per second (peak of my bandwidth). That's not slow, and that's not "crap" performance. As with any other piece of software, your mileage may vary. Just don't speak as if your perfunctory speed comparisons and performance evaluations are the end-all-be-all and that it can't possibly be that it just seems slower to YOU, because that's far more likely than not. Deluge is great, and I've said as much with glowing praise in my reviews of it. But it's still relatively unstable for a LOT of people (but not everyone) under Windows, and it's still missing a few fe

I appreciate the detailed response from Prospero424 highlighting various aspects sensibly. However, I am sure what I am talking about. Unfortunately, most of the users assume that the resources they are enjoying and the environment they are working are GLOBAL and rest all users are sharing the same which is not the case. I must mention that the users in USA and Europe might not even have an idea how several countries have system of working there. I am from Pakistan and working in Saudi Arabia and both the working environments are entirely different. The existence and limitations of Firewalls and available ISP restrictions control the scene. And obviously due to that the outcome will be accordingly. When users face any problem, they report here intending the improvement of the software. If you are a regular reader of the threads you must have noticed that previously at least 30% public was reporting bugs faced in their environment so the developer get aware of these bugs while considering the next beta release. Instead of the developer, too many software fans start crying on that user with all personal comments as if they are the developer. Quite an immature behaviour. This is the main reason that several serious users have stopped reporting bugs as they don’t want to be part of this non-sense. It is an open forum. Your admiration and loyalty to the software and developer will not benefit him except moralizing him. Rather the negative comments of the users will help him considering those points while developing further. Every program has its own positive and negative features. I have used uTorrent and Deluge in identical cases and have found that Deluge handles that job which has not been taken care properly by uTorrent. When you are behind a Firewall or avail a shared IP and using a Router then you sometime cannot configure a fixed IP as explained in FAQs because of too many parameters. And due to this the port will not be forwarded properly which in turn

It's been a while, so I tried it, and still prefer the last "True" version (v1.6 build 474) over this one. That said, since I don't feel comfortable recommending this product, I steer people to BitSpirit instead. I just think it's a better product overall. uTorrent hasn't really been uTorrent since it was sold off to that RIAA/MPAA loving dude. Kind of like how SharkyExtreme wasn't really SharkyExtreme after Sharky left the site. If this product was offered as Open Source, and people could scrutinize the code while continuing to improve the product, I think I might be willing to give that a shot as my everyday BT app. But as it sits now, v1.6 build 474 is as far as I'm willing to go.

One word... awesome. Lot of bugfixes in this build. Quite stable, too.

Rated 50/50 by photonboy at Sep 24, 2008

Solid. Configurable. Stable. I've been running uTorrent for years. It had issues a long time ago but I haven't seen a hint of a glitch in over a year. I run uTorrent on BOTH Vista 32-bit and XP 32-bit. Summary: uTorrent is one of those programs that does exactly what I need with little need for improvement. *Having said this, I've observed slow-downs when running IE, Firefox or Chrome. I can't penalize uTorrent because I don't know where the "fault" lies. There does need to be a way to throttle priority towards the browsers. If you observe web slow-downs, CLOSE uTorrent and see what happens.

photonboy: The "fault" most probably lies here: http://www.speedguide.ne...ad_articles.php?id=1497 The link is for WinXP, but is also valid for Vista. The fix is a bit trickier on Vista though... :( (check http://www.mydigitallife...patch-for-event-id-4226/) uTorrent rock btw! :)

Love this program. at about 250KB its amazing these days, as this packs more functions and features than most 10MB programs these days.

Though I am a Vuze addict, I have to admit that uTorrent is a very good client. I've had thoughts of switching over many a time, mainly because of Vuze's ridiculous memory usage. But Vuze's plugin support and unmatched configurability is what keeps me there.

Rated 50/50 by idodialog at Oct 9, 2008

To be fair I just tried Vuze. It torrented OK but there's so much stuff going on, I felt I was in an expensive luxury store and I couldn't buy something basic like a pair of jeans which is all I wanted. I hear that the add-ons are appreciated by some. But I really can't think of anything I'd like to add on! uTorrent lets me download when, how and where I like. Its (super)light, configurable, gives me great info on what's going on - and I don't have to learn anything and it stays right out of the way. One of the lightest and most essential apps on my set-up (and on my Linux set-up too [under Wine]).

THE BEST !!! Much better than bloatware Vuze (Azureus) written in Java (which is so slow...)

This version does not "seed" all files - most of them hang like "Queued seed" :(
