µTorrent by Ludvig Strigeus Screenshot µTorrent Screenshot

uTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients.

Best torrent client going. -- 2009-02-25: Version 1.9 (build 14659) - Change: uTP variable packet sizes (decreases overhead) - Change: added code for handing bundles with the bundle type encoded in the bundle - Change: modified the bundle code to unconditionally pop up dialog box - Change: modified installer to remove the extra 32 bytes for the bundle type when installing from bundle - Change: added checkbox to the build torrent dialog so the user has the option not to rearrange the file order. - Change: Modified the string for the "Start Seeding" checkbox to use 't' as the shortcut since 's' was being used by "Create and Save As..." - Change: lengthen "About" dialog - Fix: no longer shows "make this your default .torrent handler" when running a bundle

OK, I admit it. I switched from Vuze to µTorrent. I was on the fence and hated giving Vuze up, but I don't see its shortcomings EVER being corrected. Oh well. µTorrent has come a long way since I first tried it. Back then, it was a good-running client, but was short on features. (That didn't stop people from raving as if the µTorrent author had invented oxygen.) I have not tried this alpha yet, but it looks like some nice new features are coming up the pike for µTorrent.

I cannot change upload speed in 1.9 Build 14908 Beta, am I the only one?

Chnage Log New alpha! The main change is that uTP (UDP torrenting) is added and enabled by default. It also has real-time transfer rate control and latency minimization. -- 2009-04-1: Version 1.9 (build 14981) - Fix: uTP would not ramp up its rate fast enough - Change: .torrent association not a factor in displaying the installer - Fix: remove file association registry keys on uninstall - Fix: invalid encoding of non-ascii urls in web seeds - Fix: uTP fix when receiving acks for old packets - Fix: uTP variable packet size bug - Change: link to EULA in installer - Change: added knob to set the uTP target delay (adjusts how hard to push uTP uploads) - Fix: don't wait indefinitely for trackers and UPnP when shutting down (two new advanced options)

There's a reason why 1.9 is still ALPHA (not beta). Check the official forums. I recommend 1.8.2 (stable). But that's besides the point: µTorrent is, in fact, the bee's knees.

Awesome program !!! Much better than Vuze (based on slow Java).. Less memory usage, same speed and functionality ;)

1 from me because of the Ask.com browser toolbar. I'll also stop upgrading to the newer versions because of this.

Rated 50/50 by SuzzyWoozy at May 6, 2009

@Lands: did you got through the whole installation process? ... on my computer is reaches a step in which I can *uncheck* the options to deploy Ask.com toolbar and stuff - which obviously I did. 5 stars

Clean, efficient, low memory footprint, and has all the features I need.

I'll just save myself a lot of trouble and wait until it's final.

Softpedia is bulls***. The toolbar is optional, and is easily ignored by people paying attention to the install process. If you are NOT paying attention, or do not know how avoid installing optional components that are not required to complete installation, you might want to learn a bit more about such things before using a peer-to-peer file distribution application.

UTORRENT dosen't include toolbar! If it would include then it wouldn't fit in the 300kb microtorrent setup! ASK Toolbar is downloaded separately when user doesn't read carefully. *ASK Toolbar is meant for more income when people don't got any other way to donate*

Ok, it seems that some people didn't understand my comments, so I'll be even clearer. I don't care if the toolbar is downloaded together with the uTorrent installer or afterwards. What I care about is whether it's offered to be installed BY DEFAULT or not. That is to say, if you accept all default options in the uTorrent installer, you end up with an unneeded and unwanted advertising toolbar in your browser. Not nice. And OF COURSE you can choose NOT to install it, but that's not the point. The point is -again- that the DEFAULT option is to install it, i.e. the boxes are "checked", not "unchecked". The funniest part is that another program that bundles this same advertising toolbar, Comodo Internet Security, actually detects the Ask toolbar as "Unclassified malware" ... Talk about irony! :D Take a look: http://www.calendarofupd...p;type=post&id=6114 Back to the uTorrent installation, I don't worry about myself because I know very well how to avoid that stuff (I'm really tired of having to choose "custom install" in every single program I install, but I know what a mistake it'd be not to do so), however we all know that the average user isn't always so heedful. Besides, it's obvious that Ask pays uTorrent for every toolbar install. Why do you think they do that? Think about it, it's very clear

Dude, even the latest Java runtime installs a toolbar by default now. So does the Foxit PDF reader, IrfanView image viewer, Daemon Tools, and plenty of other programs at the top of their respective classes. These are hard times for code monkeys, and they need to scrape together cash any ethical way they can. As long as they make the option to refuse these options during installation prominent and clear, I have NO problem with this. And the optional Ask Toolbar is adware (or is it spyware?), NOT uTorrent. There is no reason to reclassify uTorrent as "adware" simply because the functionality of the software is completely unaffected by your choice of whether or not to install the toolbar. If you're going to rule out EVERY piece of software that optionally installs revenue-generating third-party software, you're either going to be stuck using second-class freeware or *GASP*, actually PAYING for your software! Even some really good open-source software is starting to bundle these days. Everybody's got their own preferences, and preferring an alternative to uTorrent or whatever is fine and dandy. But refusing to use perfectly good software JUST because it's got an optional bundle is just silly in this day and age. I tried this latest version briefly, had no problems, and went back to the stable release. Seems as efficient and speedy as ever.

It's not "ad-supported freeware". I have uTorrent installed and don't see any ads anywhere. They don't install the toolbar without your permission (as some scumbags do).

To Prospero424: I see your point, and partly agree with it. I may have been a bit drastic in my previous statements. However, you’re making it sound as if poor Ludvig Strigeus needs to bundle the Ask toolbar to feed his starving children (“These are hard times for code monkeys”), while the truth is that he sold uTorrent to BitTorrent Inc. a few years ago for an undisclosed amount. BitTorrent Inc. is a company which has received several millions of dollars in funding and appointed its first Chief Financial Officer less than a year ago. They’re not starving, they’re just cashing in on their investment, which is perfectly OK, but I resent their abusing the “freeware” label. This program is now an ad-supported freeware, which in my book is a type of adware, just like other fine programs like the ones you mentioned. I’d also like to point out that it’s not necessarily true that you’ll be stuck using second-class freeware should you shun this kind of programs. In some cases you’ll have no options, but in others there are first-class alternatives, for example: Virtual CloneDrive for Daemon Tools, PDF-XChange Viewer for Foxit Reader and XnView for Irfanview. Let me finish by saying that one of my favorite programs is the excellent and ad-supported Weather Watcher :) I don’t want to turn this into a debate about freeware-adware. Everybody’s points are very clear now and I won’t comment again here. I wish I could post without voting, but I can’t, so I’ll give the program five stars this time since it’s the closest to its current average.
