Handbrake is a utility that can convert standard DVD's into a compressed format of your choice. mp4 with AAC audio or AVC with h264 video and AAC audio. It also lets you crop the image to get rid of the black bars to bring down the size even more and lets you choose options as to how you want it encoded.

Easy to Use, worked well A little slow converting a full movie

It does exactly what i wanted to do for a while now. So far so good. No cons to report at the time. Though, the only thing I CAN think of is the speed. its not really "quick". I have been looking fora good media converter/dvd ripper for forever, and this one is perfect! Plus it's free. It's easy to use and understand after playing with it for a few minutes, which is a huge plus. I'd recommend it for anyone from beginners to tech savvy people.

Good ability to tweak videos using advanced controls, but need to spend a great deal of time to learn the awful interface, try converting a 16:9 High Def movie to 4:3 standard definition without letter boxing (ie. zoom) and you'll see the issue! No batch capability!Very limited support for various formats.Second worst user interface of any conversion program (have to save the top honour for Stoik Video Convertor) Powerful tool if you want to convert one movie at a time, in the format that the developers want you to use. In other words, this program has extremely limited use. I switched from Mac to Windows so I could use better programs than this. For most people, Freemake Video Converter is a far better option.

Lots of formats to choose from or customize. Slow but all rippers are slow. Also, no preformat for Samsung Galaxy. I have tried others, but keep returning to handbrake as ripper of choice.

For a free app, the quality of video conversion was outstanding on my iPhone4. Easy to use. Batch processing manages wait time. No watermarks. You can convert directly from the DVD drive on the PC, or from a folder on your drive. It takes about 2-3 times the length of the video to do a conversion, but this is true for the converter programs I tried. Batch processing available. Previewing files is clunky as it does a mini-conversion for 10 seconds. Although it takes time to convert files (double to triple the time of the video), the application will allow you to batch process conversions. What a great way to make movie files from your own collection to take with you while traveling. Along with a free decoder app like DVD43, even protected DVD's from your own collection can be converted. It is easy to use this application, even being a beginner, I got the job done. I tried AVS Video as a trial, and the quality of converted video was poor and the watermark annoying. I use a PC with Windows7, and had no problems.

Quick, efficient, no need for any technical knowledge, just select file, output folder, mp4 container/format and go. No increase or decrease in audio output (Much needed) No increase in Brightness in output (Preferred) A very bad dual audio file was tested in 8 popular converters. The bad thing was the first or default audio was corrupt. All other converters (that includes a paid one) converted without any audio output. Handbrake 094 checked and automatically converted the original vob file's second but good audio to mp4. And it was one of my favorite movies.

saves hard drive space does not work with all dvd

Works great. Converts all movies without any problem. None so far. I use it to burn all of my movies to an external hard drive in conjunction with AnyDVD. Then I load them unto I Tunes and I can see all my movies from my couch without having to find the actual discs.I use Metax to add movie posters and info. It looks much like Netflix which I also use to stream movies. I can carry all my movies where ever I go which is useful to me as I spend summers in one state and winters in another. All I need is the hard drive, Apple TV and wireless.

easy to use. Clean user interface. Good output quality Has problems with foreign movies with subtitles. Subtitles with more than 1 line of text are overlaid onto a single line, making them unreadable.

Quickly transfers your movies from DVD to hard drive. The Mac version works slightly better. After backing up 250+ of our movies from DVD only 2 didn't work on the PC, but were fine on the Mac. But maybe this was a hardware issue. Handy tool for everyone who likes to have their movie library available through their media centre rather than shuffling through DVDs.

User-friendly, fast, gets the job done, and it's free. What more could you ask for? None that I can find yet. Does exactly what I wanted to do: convert vobs to iPod format. Very easy to use and quite fast at doing the job. Went through about 10 different converter programs before finding HandBrake, all of which would output a file with horrible audio delays. Finally found this and it works perfectly. Great for converting videos to watch on an iPod Touch.
