Many powerful editing features This is not really a negative; just an observation that with power comes complexity. As an occasional user, I have to learn and re-learn how to use many of the features each time I use Notepad++. I am not a programmer. My primary use for a powerful text editor is in cleaning up data files that come to me as text files, and need to be cleaned and formatted properly for loading into database software. I also use it for writing complex formulas that I paste into Access queries or into cells in Excel. Sometimes I edit complex SQL queries in Notepad++. I don't do this every day, or even every month, but when I need to do it I really need something like Notepad++. Because my use is sporadic, I commonly forget how to use some of the features, but that would happen with any such editor I might use. I do find Notepad++ approach to multiple editing windows a bit quirky. One can have two windows visible at once, either side-by-side or one above the other, but Notepad++ way of opening the second window is unusual. Still, once you know it, it works well.

"Versatile and convenient editor" Excellent general purpose editor for simple development projects and text editing. Great for handling complex independent or stand-alone projects. And it's free. No integrated source code management or collaborative support for mutli users. Not a real problem, just outside the scope of this product Very helpful, free resource.

"Fully functional text editor, that's free!" Useful for updating text based files such as html, scripts, etc., No obvious cons. Not a competitor for real note taking tools such as Evernote, but you still need a basic test editor and this one works a treat.

The simplest HTML coder avialable. Makes hardcoding Web pages a breeze. Absence of Site Manager. This program enabled me to finish my projects in school with ease. Its functionality and usability are the features that I admire the most. The same features you can find from a well designed Web site. I recommend Notepad++ to anyone who are just starting to learn creating Web pages.

"About time. Freedom of choice" I haven't seen a small fast efficient highly customizable code/GP developers' editor like this since Qedit in the MS-DOS '80's in what has become an overpoweringly windows trademarked Microsoft OS environment. Good stuff. More please. Still have to watch it in motion to see how it dances. That means cooking for the Microsoft menu. Are we in the mood? That's a big ask. More exposure needed beyond intuitive/predictive.

And of course none of the bugs I've observed with this for months now have been addressed. Inactive tab colors still do not persist. https:// links are STILL not clickable. And another annoyance - the syntax highlighter for AutoHotKey only highlights words that are suffixed by a space. "DetectHiddenWindows, on" doesn't highlight the keyword, whereas "DetectHiddenWindows , on" does. PSPad, Notepad2 work fine in this regard. I'll keep checking back but this is turning into the iPhone of the text editor world: glossy on the front, crapburger behind the curtains.

Great app. Here are the changes for 5.6.1: 'In this version brace matched broken issue is fixed. A lot of encodings are added as well. I take the chance to thank Thell Fowler and Vitaliy Dovgan. The "Mark Jumper" feature idea come from Thell. Without him this feature won't be in v5.6.x. Vitaliy has fixed the searching case insensitive for non ascii characters. Thanks to Chris, the NppHelp is updated. Here are Notepad++ v5.6.1 new features and fixed bugs (from v5.6) : 1. Fix brace highlighting breaking issue and related performance problem. 2. Add new encodings in the shortcuts map. 3. Remove annoying encoding issue warning dialogs. 4. Enhance Html encoding auto-detection. 5. Fix case-insensitive searching bug for non-ascii characters (for example some characters in French and Cyrillic letters). 6. Add find result commands in the menu. 7. Add DOS CodePage : CP437, CP737, CP850, CP852, CP855, CP857, CP858, CP860, CP861, CP863, CP865, CP866 and CP869. 8. Fix localization combo box unselected in preference dialog bug after startup (when a localization file is in use). Don' @dhry: Try to report these bugs on forums, bug tracker or directly to developers.

Good, getting better. To dhry: There is a difference between missing functionality (lack of support for https:// addresses) and a bug (a feature not working in the intended way). Your rating method is very subjective and therefore of little worth. Some of the annoyances you have reported (highlighting issues, for example) are extremely limited in scope and may be beyond author's ability to address (supporting syntax of a language you are not familiar with is a major pain - the author is probably using highlighters files provided by someone else). Also, at least with regard to highlighters, it's not difficult to fix (.xml at worst) and... best of all, AutoHotkey does not seem to be on the list of supported languages in stable releases. So, kindly either do it yourself or switch to a different editor - it will save you a lot of grief. Regards, Ruemere

Pfft. http://2.gp/ezy - the https:// bug has been reported a total of FIVE TIMES in the bugtracker already. For some reason they're all classified as everything EXCEPT a bug, which is what I consider the issue to be. The author seems to be concerned with incredibly insignificant changes (such as modifying the program icon). And even if they WERE listed as bugs, this comment (http://2.gp/ezz) has it dead-on. Author doesn't appear to give a toss. You get what you pay for with this. Pass.
