K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and DirectShow filters. Those components are needed for encoding and decoding various audio and video formats. This Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files.K-Lite Mega Codec Pack combines the contents of two packs: K-Lite Codec Pack Full and Real Alternative.

I had a commemorative "enhanced" CD that had both audio and video. This codec pack didn't take a lot of space, and also got WIN Media Player correctly recognizing some other formats easily. I am impressed. No cons at all! I don't use Windows as much (mainly Ubuntu), but this software is going on my "must install" list for Windows, for recommending to friends and family. Nice job!

Better than any other codec pack.Better than standalone players like KMplayer/GOM/VLC MPC though with classic look is the most versatile player For older pcs, don't choose to use the internal DXVA filter as it can make the videos run sluggish (i think it's not turned ON by default, option available during installation if you choose User defined/Advanced Settings) Just Use this. Don't use any other pack. Also install more than one codec pack on your pc, it may make things go wrong.

Last time just going into a folder with mp4 files crashed my windows explorer. with this one mkv files crashes it. And the only solution is yet again to disable thumbnails... so annoying...

It didn't take too long to download The package installed media player classic and then defaulted all my video and audio to that player, I thought I was downloading a codec pack, not another player too.

@Epsi: DivX H.264 decoder and CoreAVC both have problems with thumbnail, if you set ffdshow for decoding H.264 you will probably fix the crashes.

@ Eltortuga, with CoreAVC installed you can't have thumbnails for all filetypes or explorer crashes. If you don't use CoreAVC uninstall it and your problem will be fixed or deselect thumbnails in install.

I love K-lite Mega Codec but it has been crashing Windows Explorer excessively. I either have to disable thumbnail view or uninstall K-Lite. I even reinstalled Windows XP but to no avail. It's the best when it works but I can only give it three stars this time.

FOR ME THERE REALLY WAS NO PROS... REGUARDLESS WHAT I DOWN/UP LOADED, AND/OR QUAILTY. IT LEFT THERE DOTS EVENLY SET. THAT TURNED INTO SOME NAIL LOOKING MARKS. I HAD TO UNINSTALL ALL MY CODEC(S). AND REINSTALL THE ONES THAT I KNOW FOR A FACT, WORK! BOTTOM-LINE, IF IT IS NOT BROKE. DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT! AFTER UNINSTALLING, AND REINSTALLING. NOW I'M MISSING THE K-LITE MEGA CODEC THAT WORKED. 'CAUSE I THOUGHT THIS ONE WAS AN UPGRADE. AND ITS NOT! ITS MORE TROUBLE THAN ITS WORTH. AGAIN, BOTTOM LINE. ''IF ITS NOT BROKE, DO NOT TRY AND FIX IT''...

Works in the back round, and nearly always works When it doesn't work, there is no mechanism to find the correct codec

Very little. Lost volume control from all media players, had to use PC control Made very little difference to what I could and could not play across the range of media players I have. The major problem is the loss of volume control via the media player

-Integrates seamlessly with Windows Media Player-Minimizes need for more than two media players-Stable -It isn't preloaded with WMP When I was early in my computer experience, I realized that Windows Media Player couldn't do everything at once. It was quite frustrating (not to mention the continued onslaught from my colleagues who would belittle my trust in Microsoft Products...we're talking early 2000s here). Thus, I had, Winamp for streaming using PLS files, Realplayer, for an integrated Web, Entertainment experience, WinDVD for movies, and Windows Media Player for CDs, MP3s and WMAs (yes, WMAs sound dramatically better than MP3 at the same bit rate). This went on for a while, until I realized there was a such thing as CODECS... Of course, CODEC is short for "Encode/Decode format" (I may be paraphrasing)... In the end, different people use different formats at different times because there are up and downsides to all of the formats and, depending on the intended environment, different codecs are needed. Microsoft provides very few codecs with Windows Media Player--for legal reasons, I'm sure (Yes, still believing in the goodness of Microsoft :-)) Getting back, after learning about Codecs, I went searching and found a few whose names escape me at present, but in the end, they seemed to crash regularly and not provide a consistent experience. I'm sure that some of the instability had to do with my own incompetence at the time, but I was just a user--not a Tech, as I am now... K-Lite Codec Pack is hands down the most consistent pack of codecs that I've ever used. It is highly customizable. I'm not going to regurgitate the Editor's review of features, you can read it for yourself. I have been using this pack and each updated version since 2005. One of the latest changes that I see has been made is that they've ceased making the installation of Media Player Classic defaulted. In addition, at the end of the installation options (if you take the Custom route as you always
