Trillian is a multi-network chat client that currently supports IRC, AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo! Messenger. It supports all of the features you've come to expect from a good IM client, including but not limited to docking, multi-line edit boxes, buddy alerts, multiple connections to the same medium, a powerful skinning language, easy importing of your existing contacts, skinnable emoticons, logging, "global" away/invisible features, and a unified contact list. It is completely free with no nag screens or built-in ads.

Well I'm giving it 2 starts - down from 5 stars. All as nice until those stupid ad's start appearing in the chat windows. So much for my happy years with Tillian - I'm on the hunt for something else. Reason I gave it 2 stars instead of just 1 is that I like the meta-contact feature.

I'm a paying user and I don't see any ads anywhere. Their mistake is calling it "free", since adware is NOT free.

Used to love it. Now that it's adware I'll stop using it.

the new skype plugin is been considered as malware, but that will change in 1 or 2 days for avira. I submited it and they agred it was a false positive. BTW, betas are free, official version is not and has quite some limitations.
