Very good software that is lighweight and has a high detection rate. It did however have trouble removing a trojan by the name of Win32.TROJAN-AGENT-TDSS. I had to make a virus scan with another system to actually remove it. Nag screens and splash screens are annoying, but they can be easily removed if you know about restricting access to certain .exe. Update download speeds for free users have greatly improved since a few years ago.

I used Nod32 for a couple of years, it was good, but then registration problems began to the point of utter frustration, and tech support was rude to the point of non-existance! Then someone told me about Antivir, and thank goodness they did. It is a wonderful AV and I couldn't be happier. Best of all its free! And the updates are everyday and quite fast. And as to the nag screen, well it's quite tolerable, not too mention easily dissabled. I will never pay for an AV again.

This is the worst antivirus solution ive tested so far. It looks ok after installation, but soon it begins to popup big scary ads "notifier from avira. spyware is monitoring you, for 20 euros we protect you from thoose imminent attacks". So it's not freeware... it is Scareware/Nagware. My sister got infected by a virus and antivir popps up (after the infection spread!) 6+ big warning windows (they are as big as the screen itself) that clutter the screen, and if i close it, new ones popp up. If i click repair or delete, antivir is simply doing nothing... no message, no removal... nothing. The only thing it does on my sisters pc is naging/scaring her to buy the pro version and flooding her with a virus warning...

After two years of a paid NOD32 user, I migrated to Avast!, and some weeks ago, to AntiVir Free. Maybe it does not include as many features as Avast!, but its superior detection ratio, plus its NOD32-comparable scanning speed, has made it my preferred free AV, and am now considering upgrading to the paid Premium version, which is also quite cheap compared to other products.

Nope Avira will not good. Use: Comodo Internet Security Spyware Doctor Drive Sentry

Better (!!!) detection rate than NOD32. Speed comparable to NOD32.

fast backdround scanner with many updates. Have tried avg, commodo and avast. Best for games except for popups

5 stars all the way.

Still very good detection rates but don't get too excited about the new anti-spyware feature. The Avira site refers to that component in the free version as 'Basic' and in the Premium version as 'Enhanced'........hmmm!

For the first time there is the protection from spyware and adware! It is really complete now.

Finally, PE users also get spyware/malware detection features previously only available for Premium product. No problems with this on my XP SP3 system, cannot say anything about how it runs in a Vista environment. Note that this will also install "Microsoft Vistual C++ Redistributable v9.0.30729.17" in case you don't already have it. It is required for the program and may not be uninstalled afterwards (previous program version required that libraries as well, so nothing to complain about, really). All in all, probably the best scanner you can get for free. If you know how to deactivate the splash screen and the ad window (during update), it's even better.

I tried this application years ago when my PC was a 800 MHz processor and found that it worded perfectly and with a minimal impact of the system. Norton AntiVirus would simply "kill" my system.

I tested so far: KAV (AVP), NOD32 v2,3,4, McAfee Antivirus, Arcavir, Trend Micro Office Scan, Norton AV (various versions), F-Prot v5 + DOS version and Avira (8 and 9) of course (including premium). I recommend Avira because: - highest detecion level (beats even Kaspersky!) LOOK THERE: www.av-comparatives.org - fast scanning - free for personal use - fast response from support - it needs small amount of resources - premium users can download a rescue cd - no problems with installation and running (like BSOD etc.) Peter

This version ( 9.0.0.386 ) hogs CPU without any particular reason. Especially when updating product or saving files to HDD. I'm very dissapointed with Avira PE 9.

Rated 40/50 by prghon at Mar 27, 2009

us3r, yeah that and scan is painfully slow. Otherwise it has a strong detection rate which is absolute number one priority so I'm giving this 4.5

Excellent software, low on system resources. Highly recomended.

Quality German programming! I've used this anti-virus application for years and I'm still incredibly impressed! The detection rates are just unparalleled: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ http://mtc.sri.com/live_data/av_rankings/ With some additional custom settings, malicious software will have a hard time infecting your PC system. I've also used AVG, Avast and NOD32, but this application is still my first choice by far. Version 9 has some extreme on-demand scanning performance improvements for users with a multi core CPU. A company offering a freeware version of their flagship application like this, inspires genuine trust and respect!

Best antivir. I kinda like the nagscreen. It shows that an update has occurred and all you have to do is click the OK button, press Enter or space. Besides that it doesn't matter if you do something. It updates anyway even if you haven't pressed the nagscreen.

Get rid of the sloppy and juvenile nag screen. And no, I don't want to hear about any kludges to get rid of it. It shouldn't be there. Period. THREE stars for the unnecessary annoyance factor and author stupidity (which is a shame since the product kicks a** and would get a FIVE otherwise).
