Get version 9 for the best antivirus around. Avast is the only one that can match it. Version 10 is BUG-E to say the least! GET VERSION 9 AT BROTHERSOFT.COM! I am not advertising for Brothersoft.com. I simply could not find version 9 anywhere else. Version 10 is a DISASTER. The updater rarely works if at all. GET VERSION 9 AT BROTHERSOFT.COM! No, I do not work for Brothersoft.com but I barely could find version 9 anywhere. Avira 10 is a worthless piece of junk. Avira should not have tried to improve on an already good product. Brothersoft.com(once again, I AM NOT just trying to slam CNET or advertise that website;I could not find version 9 anywhere else). Avira 9 could be beaten only by Panda or Avast and even then, only by one percent at the most. Avast has more "shields" but I find Avira detects drive-by downloads almost as fast and just as accurately meaning Avast finds them on the connection itself while Avira detects them as soon as they enter the browser/computer. Avira is really good for stopping the "heur.html.malware" detection that is scary levels of prevalent online now. That is a drive-by download. Need any more proof? Get Avira 9 at Brothersoft.com(one last time I say, I am not advertising for Brothersoft.com;I could find Avira 9 nowhere else). You will be amazed at the detection and at the size of the updates(today it was 2.5 mb;Avast's biggest I ever saw was about 1.5 and that was rare). Long updates are GOOD. That means the protection is BETTER. Have Avira send you the update details to your e-mail inbox. You will be amazed at the level of spyware, not just viruses or worms, that Avira catches. I DELETED SUPERANTISPYWARE AFTER INSTALLING THIS. PREVX AS WELL(I admit, I hesitated to delete Prevx;Prevx REALLY works as well but it is a "cloud" program;"cloud" means they know everything on your system, a violation of privacy in and of itself, because you are constantly connected to their server to get their database which is thebiggest on Earth;not entire

I have used for over a year on one system and had no problems with either malware or the AV program itself. It is unobtrusive on system and seems to do its job. As with any program takes a few minutes to understand its interface but this is very minor. For the last year I have had 5 different AV products both paid and free on our 5 different computers. OS are W2000, XP, and Vista. This product has performed quietly and well on a heavily used computer so I have come to trust it and plan to continue using it on a new computer I am purchasing.

One of the best anti virus programs out there. It has a high detection rate, easy on resources, very fast scanning of files, and does not slow your PC down, and it's free. I tried Avast and it slowed my computer to a craw. I went back Avira. I have none. Updated on Jun 30, 2010

I have used Avira for ages. Ever so often I try other AVs but always return to Avira. Simple, free and so far protective The updates are hit and miss, the scans last forever. I am a Avira user since the beginning of times. Sometimes I fall on the trap of using other AVs (Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Avast, AVG) but either they take a lot of processing to work or hijack your PC to fit their purpose. Avira is simple, does not take a lot of room and so far has kept my computer clean. The Control Panel is not very user friendly and you have to trust that the program is doing its job... whcih I think it is. Scans last an eternity though and there are no "jazzy" buttons do make simpler scans, you have to use the scheduler to make an "ad hoc" scan which might be a bit defeating for a less clued user.Updates are not always straight forward as on the free edition it tends to load an advertising page (it is free so we have to "suffer" this) but this loading delays and sometimes stops the updating process. A bit annoying... but it is FREE

I switched to Avira from Avast when my attempted upgrade from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5 went pear-shaped and caused me all sorts of problems. I could not repair it or even uninstall it. Avira is working well for me. I don't like the messages that come up repeatedly suggesting I upgrade to the Premium edition. Other than that, I am really happy to use Avira, and would not now move back to Avast.

It works in the background without slowing the pc down nothing it works well

installing this on a CLEAN PC can help prevent most malicious codes from entering your computer. The best part is that it's free everytime i update, it keeps on saying that the servers are overloaded or something like that. It took two weeks before it can actually update and that even failed for some reason. While it does provide users with wonderful detection, the updates are very troublesome if not buggy, especially with the release of new malware every minute, it is imperative to always be kept up-to-date. Other antivirus programs that offer better updates will give more protection and immediately. Avira Antivir is good but not as a free antivirus. Stick to the paid if you insist. Otherwise, opt for other free antivirus programs available.

Ease of access when downloading, ease of scanning all files time to scan all files, scan stops when using other programmes have used Avira for several years now from one computer to another --- 'nuff said

Seemed to work just as well as AVG and AVAST! Your "POP UPs" demanding additional purchases drove me nuts and away! Put your product in front of your marketing and you'll get more business.I probably would have bought your upgrade but you treated me like a Jamaican street vendor would!

Very good detection rates, probably has the fastest on demand scanner of all Antivirus softwares, does a good job at cleaning up of Malware. Realtime protection follows the same kind of procedure as an on demand scan if it detects something ie. manual clean up of the Malware by the user which can be a headache, notorious for false positives, almost never updates automatically. Avira Antivir was simply the best Antivirus for me when Avira Antivir 9 came out, everything about it was terrific,be its realtime protection or be its on demand scanning(although then too it had a high rate of false positives),cleaning up of malware and everything else, but when its latest version came out some of its potency did go down as well as some of its basic features became a headache really,eg.auto updates took a beating,it now almost never updates by itself and has to update manually everytime,if it detects something in realtime,it notifies the user but the user has to perform a manual procedure to have the threat removed. Also many users complain of too many Avira advertisement popups.Overall,it is still one of the best Antivirus solutions around when when compared to other programs, hence 4 stars.

Easy To Use And Effective Every Update I Get An Offer To Buy The Premium Product

Rated 40/50 by Pcramedic at Jul 18, 2010

70% detection rates (highest in the industry), realtime protection, free Does not include things like mail guard and phishing protection. All in all, this is my pick for the best free antivirus, however I do use the premium suite due to 25% better detection rates.
