Totally free and so far effective None to report as of this date I use it on my second loan out laptop and didn't want to pay for the excellent product on my personal laptop so I, trusting other peoples opinion of it have had it on the machine I loan out for a year without problems. What more can you ask of a free product?

No pros - this is a scam Very hard to remove. Once it is installed you cannot access the web, and you cannot delete or uninstall it using normal means. Antivir and Antivir 2010 are rogue anti-spyware programs that are promoted through the use of fake online anti-malware scanners. When browsing the web you may see a pop-up that states your computer is infected and that you should run an online anti-malware program to scan your computer for infections. If you click on this pop-up you will be brought to a site that shows an advertisement that pretends to be an online anti-malware scanner. At the end of the advertisement, it will state that your computer is infected and that you should download and install Antivir to protect yourself. When Antivir is installed it will be configured to start automatically when Windows starts. Once started it will scan your computer and list numerous infections on your computer, but will not allow you to remove them until you purchase the program. The reality is that the infections it finds are legitimate programs that should not be deleted as it may cause your computer to not run properly. Therefore, please do not purchase this program or act on any of the scan results that are shown.

Great detection rates.Fast scans.I have used them all and trust this Free version over all of the other Free or Paid Antivirus programs.I had a 6 Month Free trial of the Paid version and it was also great.I probably will buy it.Saved me many times. Non that I can think of.Sure you get a pop-up sometimes when it updates asking you or offering you to buy the Premium Version but no problem.Just click on it and it goes away and updates. Can't believe some people give such bad reviews just for that. If you want good protection for your computer I would highley recommend this to anyone.Fast scans and even has a Rootkit scan you can use for hidden objects.Has one of the best detection rates for all Antivirus programs. You can google Antivirus detection Rates for Antivirus Programs and check out how high the detection rates are for this.Even though the Free Avira does not have an Email Scanner Trust me.If you get a Virus in and Email it will find it quick anyway. Also if you are using Yahoo email it scans emails with Norton anyway.Sure you get a pop-up sometimes when it updates asking you or offering you to buy the Premium Version but no problem.Just click on it and it goes away and updates. Can't believe some people give such bad reviews just for that.I mean really how long does it take to click on that pop-up to go away. One mouse click is all.

"Best freeware out there" Free first off, one of the best ones out there to date. Cnet lets anyone rate software. Should implant an IQ test before granting review privileges. Don't let previous posts discourage you from trying Avira. Alot can be said from looking at one's sentence structure. By looking at the previous reviews and the run on sentances I can tell these people are most likely lazy by nature. So if your comp... read more >>

"Great Anti -Virus!" I really liked the way it scans with very good speed. I prefer Avira user presentation over AVG, AVAST, Symantec and McAfee. Downloading updates is a breeze. Of all the anti-virus, I think AVAST is the fastest of the lot. The Avira slows the systems down a little bit and stops upon detection. I believe Avira is as good as AVG and AVAST in virus detections. I was so hard pressed to find any surprises during scanning.

I can’t believe that you have never even answered any of my E mails. How in the world do you say you have over 100+ million users but you do not answer any e mails for Tec Support? Please just refund my money… For over 40 years I have giving Seminars to/for all size Companies like, Exxon, Shell, Kroger and many others for the purpose of helping them better their relationship with their Customers. I have never known a Company that needs help as much as your Company does. I do mean this with all due-respect as your Company has a great Product. But as far as your Tec. Support is you are a total failure. I, for the life of me can’t understand why you do not have “live” phone technical support in the US. I have tired for over 10 days to get help and all I get is that my problem has been turned over to the “Proper” department but that is where the help stops. The two most important “Themes” of my Seminars was/is, “Getting Back To Basics and Commutation” I charged $5,000. For 2 hours for these Seminars and I am mot trying to sell you any thing. So this is free. You really need to re-vamp your program. I would just like a refund and purchases a soft ware program for another Company who really cares about Support. Respectfully Submitted, Chef'Bob doubleduce@suddenlink.net P.S. It might be of interest to you that I do talk by E mail to over 250,000 families a day on the internet and what I recommend to them is most important to most Companies.

Windows XP Home 1. Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 constantly while the computer is rebooting). 2. Log into an account with administrator privileges. 3. Open [driveinstalledon]:Program FilesAviraAntiVir PersonalEdition Classic. 4. Right click on avnotify.exe and go to Properties > Security > Advanced. 5. Click on Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> OK. 6. Repeat for all users. 7. Reboot your computer normally.

Alexander-GG, you will find out once you start testing the other free alternatives. About the update database, i beleive you have installed antivir after you get infected by something (maybe conficker). I got that and add to clean the system first and then reinstall avira, since conficker f***up some stuff. It is not jsut an avira "issue", conficker mess up with almost all known antivirus. Sometimes i can update my database 2 and more times.

I don't suffer hard sell garbage well. Use MS Security Essentials instead. THREE stars.

Excellent program, just a shame about the adverts on every update. I always recommend the Premium version anyway as a first preference, this one if it simply must be free.

Hiding the update ads and splash screen is easy. Here is a nice tutorial: http://www.codecguide.co..._antivirus_software.htm

The BEST free antivirus in detecting s*** in your PC... 5/5

Rated 30/50 by Alexander-GG at Mar 28, 2010

@tontito and all others. No, my PC was not infected. I installed Avira on a fresh Win 7 Ultimate system. Update servers unavailability is not just my problem and all permanent users of this antivirus know about this issue. Even Avira's native "after uninstall" screen points to this issue by sarcastic question - "Do you uninstall Avira because of database update problems?" This is just the same stupid marketing policy of Avira team which tries to remind you every possible time and with every possible reason that you are the free product user. I know perfectly how to remove the nag screen and splash screen. But just tell me - why should I do this manually and spend my time on such silly things? Just because I use their free product? Or does this little inconvenience make me to buy a premium version? Of course, NO! Today, there are such strong concurrents like MS Security Essentials and Avast 5. So, I'll simply switch to one of them (already did and feel happy). Avira you should quit your Marketing Manager. By the way I have the Masters degree in this field.

"Excellent!" light, high detection rate, reliable no web guard, annoying pop-up

Rated 20/50 by PillowPC at Mar 29, 2010

The User Interface is much nicer than in previous versions. Avira does not and cannot protect you from modern threats (which would be spyware and trojan-type infections, mostly aimed exploiting weakness in your browser). Horrible impact on PC performance. Popups will drive you mad. Ratings and entries obviously provided by bots. There aren't 3,000,000 users dumb enough to download and use this product. Don't be fooled. This is not a high quality product and it will not protect you consistently from modern threats. This is not the A/V protection you're looking for... AVG is by far your best choice, among both free and paid products, in terms of both detection/removal rates, and PC performance. Avast is a distant 2nd for detection, but it too consumes PC resources far beyond what it should. I spend a huge portion of my billable hours removing spyware infections professionally. I know exactly what works and what does not. I would never put Avira on the system of a client that I hoped to see again. Use AVG.

BETTER LOOK! I'v been testing Avira on a VM and it has been missing 50% of the Trojans. It lack the protection it once had. It has more pop ups. I was involved in the Beta testing and I have to say that there has been know improvement to this release. I hope you Avira lovers don't have to find out the hard way. Test it for yourselves and watch some reviews on Youtube if you don't have a VM. I hope Avira can get itself back on track, it was a good product!
