Active SMART allows you to monitor the S.M.A.R.T. parameters of your hard disk to detect fault conditions. It uses special algorithms to predict the date of a possible drive fail. It also gives you full information about your hard disk. Various monitoring modes and alerting options are available. The built in messaging features allow for system administrators to be notified of impending hard disk failure on any machine on the network.

"It looks good to try and it is free on Vista." Great to know that it is free. No idea about any virus. I have Anti-virus installed on my PC. I will submit review after using it for 30 days. It has Pro version, which is slightly different from free version. Try it on your own risk. Found nothing yet. It is good to try.

"Does not work on my SATA RAID arrays" Nothing found so far since it did not work on any of my disks. Did not work on my SATA RAID arrays. The documentation does not even mention RAID. I'll try something else.

"after install of 2nd HD, indicated need of an extra fan" I like the system tray info , very handy so far I haven't found a con I just spent a fortune on a new machine after losing the old one to over heated HDs, After buying a second HD 1.5tb , I wanted to ensure that I didn't burn another one out. This software lead me to buy an additional fan.

Professional tool that gives me full information concerning my hard drives, it does not require any tech approach and also light (almost invisible) on system resources. No cons at all, and I use it quite a long time. This prog is a must-have one for every PC user who is concerned about the health of his/her hard disks. This tool is such sensitive you can check just by drinking a cup of hot tea in front of your laptop monitor as the temperature shown from your taskbar will go up from 38* to 40*. Definitely cost it's price. Highly recommend.

It gives you a nice graph showing the trended temperature and for each of the smart parameters. You can see how the HDD's reach their peak temperature in the hot afternoons and cool down at night. Doesn't work too well with a Raid Controller, It was able to see one of my pass-through drives but not the other. My five HDD's reached 55 DegC & they were almost too hot to touch! Activesmart monitored the whole thing but didn't actually intervene. Overall the program works well as a trending tool but fails to act if things start getting hairy such as high temperatures or high read/write fail counts. As I said my four WD 1TB HDD's and one Seagate 500GB reached a peak of 55 DegC before my CPU got too hot and the computer locked up. I came home and my living room was extremely hot and found that my computer had hung. I then opened my case up and found five extremely hot hard drives (mostly my fault because I put them one on top of each other and thought a small 8cm fan would keep them cool). I was very disappointed with Activesmart as I was just nearing the end of the trial period and thinking of buying the product until this happened. I ask you, what's the point of a monitoring tool if it does not act and shut things down to protect the very components it is monitoring? Not very active or smart! Another down fall is that it could only see one of the pass-through drives out of two in my four disk raid array. I have two pass-throughs and a mirrored drive and activesmart shows the second pass-through and mirrored drives as identical to the first pass through (in serial number, temperature, and all of the smart parameters). There are better programs out there guys and gals! Do a search on wiki on SMART technology and it will have a link showing you all the available programs, this one has considerably less features then some other great tools out there.

Good and friendly GUI.Comfortable to use.Continuous HDD state monitoring. Not free.To simple overview tab - I would place there more parameters. I used it to check new WDC HDD (2Tb) and I found several problems due to Active SMART. I am planning to replace the drive because I am going to store there valuable data. Thanks to developers of Active SMART for 30-days trial period!!

It really helps and doesn't consume resources I'd like to have an error scan

Does not detect a common WD external USB disk which has been detected by all the disk report programs I have used. Reports "bad health" in the internal disk, but the SMART parameters are all OK. It does mot explain what the problems are.

-ease of use -features -very little use of system resources nothing really I was curious to see the shape of my hard drive. And so I installed Active Smart. Good thing I did, because my hard drive was ready to crash. I did replace it on time. The best part about replacing it before it dies out is that you can clone your current hdd. This helps if you don't have the operating system CD-ROM. If you wait too long, and the hard drive dies, then you need to purchase the operating system. Active Smart helps you in giving you the current state of your hard drive. The interface is neat, and easy to use. Temperature, power-on hours, and a disk health status are just few of the features offered by the program. I use it, and recommend it!
