RAR is a general purpose archiving and compression program competing with/replacing programs such as PKZip, ARJ, and others. It offers significantly improved compression ratios, easier use and a cheaper price as well as supporting long file names, disk spanning, and self-extracting file creation. You can also try RAR for Mac OS X, Linux, or FreeBSD.

THE BEST COMPRESSION PROGRAM EVER! :) cost you money I have used this program often and I believe it is worth the money. Unfortunately, I will be using 7-ZIP until I can save up enough money to buy it. Even though I think WinRAR is the best out there, I just cannot afford it. So, sometimes, it is not that a program is not good enough... it is not affordable. It is like driving a Mercedes-Benz and having to walk. It is not that the car is not quality, money is a factor. So, I will just have to be humble for the rest of forever and be happy with what I have been given. Anyways, WinRAR has a split option where you can split the compressed file into many smaller parts so that you can store it across multiple discs. This is useful if you were saving a very large file onto a smaller available media space.

The fact that it is free.. I wouldn't drop a nickel on something so archaic. Not quite obsolete yet, but pretty close, I'd say. We are able to send huge files, and storage is rarely a problem. Can someone remind me why *they* even bother to zip stuff up? Maybe special applications I don't use. It does work well for it's purpose. In my opinion: Useless, but free. ^_^

Extracts .rar and .zip.Files in the folders can be displayed in a folder formatFastQuick DownloadThe trial doesn't end for some reason The commands and user interface are quite confusing. It's fast, does what it says, and it isn't big. Also you don't need to buy it.

Handles all common file formats. Quick, well integrated with Windows explorer interface. Since it is free, it is nag-ware and displays a "please buy the full version" window. But it's not intrusive and it's the ONLY negative I can think of for this tool. If you open compressed archive files, this is the tool to use under Windows. It supports the common ZIP format, along with the more flexible RAR format, along with Unix .TAR files compressed in Z, GZ, or BZ2 tools. And as a bonus, it will also extract files from a CD-ROM iso file. The RAR format is very nice to use because it will split a large archive into chunks of a specific size. This is great when you have to transfer a large file over a slow llink and the possibility of timeouts or transmission errors are likely. If any chunk fails, just re-send that piece. Re-sending a 25MB chunk is better than re-sending a full 2.5GB iso image.Bottom line: This is the first tool I re-install whenever I rebuild my computer, or setup a new computer for a family member.

A fine product that I did not really need or use often. No cons other than the fee for a product that I seldom used. I had a problem and sent an email to customer support. Gerhard sent a personal reply in less than an hour with two alternatives, one of which worked perfectly to solve my problem. This is a quality benchmark that any customer service unit can aspire to meet.
